Ok, this may not be the simplest of questions, and it might well have already been done,
but as it is my first thread, it is a chance to learn, right?

I typically think of someone who's very emotional, passionate and loving person.

Welcome to the Escapist!

When someone tells me so-and-so is a romantic person, I just figure they are thoughtful and not completely self centered.

People's definitions are likely different from mine on whether someone is romantic or not, so I try to just not make an assumption.

Are we talking art, literature, mindset, or ideal night with the lady?

'cuz I could really go for an "all of the above."

Oh, and this as well. A loving type aptly fits the 'romantic' definition.

Generally just someone like myself, who is charming and gentlemanly/ladylike. As I say, someone like me I would consider romantic, though I'm more a 'hopeless romantic', that is, the sort who would want to wine-and-dine a girl and be all romantic and spontaneous and whatnot.

However, you missed out a very important 'romantic' in the poll, something else I really like. That is, the Romantics of art and poetry (people like Byron, Shelley, Coleridge, Wordsworth and so on), from the late 18th century. They were just so freaking awesome... :D

Welcome to our fine community!

As for romantic people, I think of people who care a lot about emotions. I would consider myself to be very driven by emotions. Would I consider myself romantic? I think I am capable of being very romantic, yes. Am I romantic? I would like to think so.

More of an 'other' option, but when someone self identifies as a romantic (as I am quite prone to) I try and figure out how they mean it, usually just by asking them.

Do they mean themselves to be a romantic person emotionally, or are they referring to themselves as belonging to either the old version of Romanticism as witnessed in the 1790-1810s? Or are they a new romantic, conjuring images of the bohemian about their person.

Or do they just love old Disney films?

Or of course, are they some sort of combination, writing the political poetry of the old romantics, the bohemian attitude to life of the new romantics, the romantic inclinations of a lothario and a love of old Disney movies. (I tend to fall into this last category.)

If someone refers to someone else as a romantic, I don't judge until I have met them.

Being romantic and being a romantic are completely different things.

Romantic means you are very affectionate.

Being a romantic means that you are not completely dulled by the world, and still believe in some of the cool stuff. I.E. magic is real, reincarnation, all that crazy stuff.

I think.

If they call themselves romantic, I usually interpret it to "I like passionate, emotive sex with someone I really like". If someone else says it about them, then I'm inclined to think that they create the above situation for the person they're with, with imaginative means and lots of interest in how the other person feels. It usually means they go out of their way to keep things exciting between the two.

A retard. Not trying to be offensive, but it's usually what it turns out to be. They're so mushy that it makes me sick sometimes. Yeah, I'm all for emotions, but romantics tend to take it to the millionth level...blech.
