3rd of July 2011 - So as some of you may have already heard, the artist member of the group behind the creation of Extra Credits, Allison Theus, is suffering from severe injuries to her arms and shoulders, of which one side will need open surgery to fix.
Now, a collection has already been set up by the Extra Credits team to pay for Allison's surgery and at this point has been wildly succesful, generating a susbstantial amount which will go a long way to help speed along her recovery.
However, financial support is not the only thing needed for a speedy recovery and in accordance with our best wishes as a community to see her recover swifty, I have decided to set up an online-organised prayer group to pray for her together across the globe at specific times (mentioned further in this post).
Although mainly a Christian endeadour, research studies these days are beginning to show results that suggest praying for clinical patients actually sustantially improves their health. The cause of this, whether it be some kind of placebo effect or genuine divine intervention, remains a mystery, but whatever the case, I believe that our prayers here at the Escapist could do a world of good for Allison, both physically and mentally.
Also, the studies suggest that larger groups have a greater effect, so even though I hope you are already praying for Allison, I urge you to make an extra effort. People from any religion are welcome to join and pray in whatever manner is appropriate to that religion and atheists are equally welcome to join us in this collective effort to improve Allison's wellbeing, praying specifically for a smooth operation and speedy recovery.

The times at which the prayers will be held are:

3.00 am GMT, July the 17th and 7.00 am GMT, July the 17th

These times are specifically aimed at allowing people to pray either in the morning or in the evening, depending on what their global position best allows. The 3.00 am prayer is aimed at American participants to be in the evening between 7.00 pm and 10.00 pm (west to east to coast), on July the 16th (remember that GMT 3.00 am is 1 day ahead of the U.S.).
ALSO REMEMBER to make a note in your calendars. Please tick the box in the "poll" and check back regularly as I will be updating this thread with additional information. I hope to be praying together with you for Allison's operation and recovery soon. ;)

3rd of July 2011 - OK, so it appears that some people have taken issue somewhat by the word "prayer". Therefore I have added a new option for anyone of beliefs disregarding prayer to join in anyway, namely that you should take a moment to silently "wish" Allison a speedy recovery out of the sentiment of the idea.

10th of July 2011 - Well, I have to say that it's good to see so many people come together united in support of Allison's situation. That's quite a prayer group of people who will be partaking on the 17th and even more who have agreed to wish her well at the same time. Thank you very much to all for showing your support.

17th of July 2011 - OK, so the group prayers were earlier today (depending very much on where you live). And I feel it's a good thing that so many of us were able to join together in thought and prayer concerning the recovery of such a valuable member of the Escapist community. I personally prayed at both times, so even if you were the only one to pray in that certain time zone, at least you weren't alone. ^.^
As for from now on, I will be praying on at least one of those two times every Sunday until Allison gets better, so if anyone wants to join me, you are of course very welcome to continue being a part of the prayer group.
Thanks again to everyone for their support and I give a special commendation to all the people to whom prayer is without the bounds of their personal beliefs, but were still respectful on this thread by considering the circumstances. A hat-tip to all. ;)

I understand the sentiment here and wish you lots of luck, I see you getting some flack from the extreme atheists here. Unfortunately my religious beliefs don't really let me do this, they're based on showing no bias to any God or divine being, but I promise that I will be thinking of Allison.

I'm an athiest, so I will not be praying. But just saying, you are kind of imposing by only puttting one poll option. Still, really hope she gets better

I won't be praying. I'll be wishing Allison luck and hope that the surgeons (you know, the guys who actually do the work), have no complications.

Giving money to her is one thing, but praying for her seems a little excessive. If you believe it has an effect, wouldn't your time be better spent praying for people who really need it, as in, starving people, etc.

I would, but unfortunatly I'm atheist, so I don't think any prayer from me will be very helpfull. Maybe I can hold a silent minute instead? No, you do that when someone has died, so it would probably have reversed effect.

I think I'll just try to cross my fingers for her, or something.

In this case, it's the thought that counts. It's a sweet sentiment.

As for you Farther, best of luck. I hope people continue to remain kind towards you in light of your good intentions.

Well, it won't do anything, as studies have indeed not suggested the power of prayer is viable, I'd imagine for every one study that finds a positive influence from prayer, there are many more that do not comfirm this.

However, by doing this you aren't hurting anyone, so feel free to pray until your hands bleed. Then just hope someone prays your hands get better : D

Hope she gets better.

Since you are much more restrained than I am it seems, I'll use your comment instead of mine.

Because seriously, I'm in the danger zone.

No hatred yet? O_O

I'll be praying for her myself, and all the money we've raised probably points to a good ending in all of this. :D

Citation needed.

That's probably if they pray themselves and if they believe in prayer themselves. Belief is a powerful thing. And if you want to believe in something in this case, have faith in the skills of her surgeons. They're the ones that deserve praise, support and cheering for this. I would've send money for her cause if I could've as well.

Get well soon Allison!

I couldn't help it.

Well, it certainly seems that way. Honestly I knew that an internet forum concerning youth pop culture was one of the riskiest places to try this on, but hey, know what they say about venturing nothing, right? ;)
I already have 6 people, so for all the stick I will be getting, at least I'll still be able to do what I set out to.
Your personal beliefs are perfectly fine with me, although I do stress once again that atheïsts are more than welcome to join. It's completely volutary.

I regret that as an atheist, I will not partake. I do however notice the sentiment, heartfelt emotions and good intentions. Good luck to you.

It's a nice sentiment and all but you should really try to help in some other way. I'm fairly confident Allison is in capable hands, I suggest you send a couple dollars to some starving kids mate. Best thing to do.

Prayer comes in many different forms. I've already invited people from any religion to join us in the prayers, including atheïsts. How you feel you should express your thoughts is completely up to you.

Why is there only one option in this poll?
I imagine this might confuse some people, but this thread is meant more as a gathering point for people who wish to join the endeavour, rather than as a place to argue over religious philosophies. The option is just to indicate your participation.
The post was rather difficult to write. I'm sorry if I wasn't able to convey its meaning properly.

Nope, but I sincerely hope that the operation goes alright for her. I also hope that the things we donated were enough to cover the costs.
