To my close friends it's no secret I used to play pokemon. What they don't know is how much. Between the ages of 12 and 14 almost every bit of time that wasn't spent on school or food and sleep, was filled with playing everything from the original silver, to emerald and diamond. Let's just say I've spent more time playing pokemon games than I have Fallout 3. And I've played fallout 3 for over 600 hours. But the last time I played a pokemon game was over 3 years ago.

Anyway, after watching a video of Totalbiscuit playing the pokemon TCG online, I decided to play it for my self since I'm currently stricken with a cold and have nothing better to do while miserable. While playing it I was struck with a severe sense of nostalgia. I caught myself at times thinking like, "Man I'd love to get to raise a cyndaquil up to a typhlosion again", or "I remember my first level 100 pokemon. Blaziken. That dude was a beast!".

Now I know a lot of people beckon at the word "nostalgia" calling essentially beer goggles for games, but recently I've had some good experiences with nostalgic impulses. I had a blast with Beyond good and evil HD, played through the entire halo 3 campaign the other day, as well as CoD 4 the other week and I'm highly anticipating the RE4 HD release in the next few months.

I already have a DSi that I haven't touched in a while so buying one isn't a problem.
So which one should I get?

Edit: And the fuckin poll disappeared.

If you want a game for the nostalgia, HeartGold or SoulSilver would be the way to go.
It you want something new, Black or White.

I would say to get Fire Red or Leaf Green. If it is the case that you can't play GBA games on the DSi I would go for HeartGold or SoulSilver.

A lot of people swear by Heartgold/Soulsilver. They added a lot when they remade them and they are just excellent quality. I would suggest one of those.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver are brilliant remakes of the original games. If you want nostalgia (and have a GBA or DSi), go for FireRed/LeafGreen.

If you've grown attached to specific pokemon, don't even think about Black & White. They're all new pokemon until you've got the National Dex, or accessed Dream World (which is time consuming and unreliable at best) and the general consensus is that the quality of the designs has nothing on the previous generations. There's a pokemon that's a bin bag, for god's sake.

Heart Gold/Soul Silver. I tried playing White but it wasn't nearly as Heart Gold was. I wasn't even nostalgic for 2nd gen (My first Pokemon game was Ruby.) Pokemon and I thought it was an awesome game.

Ehh, design quality is subjective. There's are 2 original Pokemon that are just purple blobs...

this or the gen 3 remake
gen 1 remake at gen 3(firered and leafgreen)
gen 2 remake at gen 4(heartgold and soulsilver)
gen 3 remake at at gen 5(the pattern is obvious this i likely to happen)

also it might be a good idea to wait for pokemon grey or what ever the hell they call the white and black remake with minor improvements. they had a remake for the other 4 generations of games so i don't see why it not happen this time

I'm gonna have to go with HeartGold or SoulSilver on that one, but I might be biased because I just got to Kanto on my restarted HG. As far as which one, there are more Pokemon missing from SS than HG as far as the first 251, but I'd just look at the lists of the Pokemon that appear in one game or the other. (It might not be a dealbreaker to some people, but if my friend hadn't been playing SS and been working as my trading buddy, I would have gone with that one just because Meowth isn't in HG.)

Got Heart Gold a couple of weeks ago. I've played every generation of games to some extent (beaten red, blue, gold, emerald, ruby, countless times and have beaten pearl and played black) but none of them has even come close to how much fun i'm having playing HG. I'm a definite Pokémaniac and HG is my new official favorite game.

I'd pick up HeartGold or SoulSilver, OR Black or White. Or wait for the third Gen 5 game.

HG and SS are amazing, amazing nostalgia. They are excellent remakes and every bit as fun as Gen 2, and that's saying something because Gen 2 was my favorite. Until Gen 5 came out.

I don't know a lot of people that actually picked up Gen 5. I, personally, adore it. I love that there's an attempt at a plot that actually works pretty well. I love the new Team. And I love the new Pokémon. In fact, I really love the new Pokémon.

Adding onto that gushing for 5th Gen, it'd be a new experience for you if you've already played Silver. I'm not saying that HG or SS wouldn't be worth picking up too, far from it; hell, I was the most excited person I knew when I finally got HG. But I was actually crying during the first ten minutes of Black, I was so happy. It was just an amazing experience to know that yes, there is more stuff to be done, and yes, they still know how to do it. As great an experience as HG was, it was still a remake. But after the huge amounts of fun I didn't have playing Diamond and Platinum, Black was a great reminder to how fun Pokémon can really be.

So throw in my vote for a Gen 5 game.

Since you can't get 3rd gen anymore and 4th gen sucked Mankey nuts, get Black.

Or White, if you want Braviary. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

if you want that old feeling again, then HG/SS is best.

if you want to feel like its something of a familiar fresh start b/w is your game.

with pearl/diamond/platnium being the middle choice.

Being stuck in the GBA phase, and not being arsed/enthused enough to buy a DS, my last Pokemon purchase was Leaf-Green from a relative who didn't want it anymore, and I for one enjoy it. It's a great remake of the 1st Generation with some nice new stuff thrown in. Obviously, you'd do just as well with Fire-Red.

Get soul silver, or do a Nuzlocke run on Emerald, because that was the best pokemon game ever made.
