So I was going through my stockpile of DVR'd Daily Show episodes today, and I was watching this clip [http://www.hulu.com/watch/264381/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-dealageddon-angry-tea-party] about the debt ceiling debate from awhile ago.

I guess I was really getting into what he was saying, but around 1:50, I started applauding at the television and felt really stupid for doing so. My roommate asked me why I was clapping, and I said I was clapping at the TV. He paused and gave me the "if I smile and nod, will you not kill me in my sleep tonight?" look. Suffice to say much awkwardness was had.

Has anyone else ever done this before, and do you remember what show it was? Is it really that weird of a thing to do? Are you planning on taking that Daily Show clip and turning this thread into an unwarranted flame war about politics?

Please share your thoughts. (and bonus points if you gave a standing ovation)

EDIT: Found another link [http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-august-1-2011/dealageddon----angry-tea-party] if the other one didn't work.

That is pretty strange actually. Will the TV say "thank you come back later" then creepily watch you go to bed? It just seems like a waste of wrist cartilage.

Never applaud, but I sometimes praise/yell at my television like the person I love/hate can actually hear me.

Coincidentally, it's The Daily Show that usually makes me do that.

Nah, applause is only useful if the person you're applauding can see/hear you.

Only a few times, usually its my "Slow Clap of Shame" when the show did something SO stupid that I think they're looking for some sort of reward for shittiness.

I remember applauding at a television, alone, precisely two times, even though I knew it was a tree falling in the woods kind of situation;

1. When I first started watching Dr. Who (after the re-launch), and I didn't know about regenerations and I thought the Doctor was going to die. When he didn't, I clapped out of joy.

2. When the Carolina Panthers won a division title in only their second year of existing. [slow clap, :not bad face: ]

Nope. I don't applaud unless people can hear me.
Well, the OP's roommate heard him. That counts, right? As for me, I'm pretty quiet when I'm watching TV.

Not often...if at all. I'll talk at/ yell at the TV though. Like while watching Bridezilla and I'm calling the BZ a ***** and calling her fiance a dumbass for not leaving the zilla's alone at the alter. Some of those guys are idiots.

I tend to go AVGN more often than anything, not in rage but in triumph while gaming. Normally after I kill a boss or a difficult enemy, I'll do the victory 'screw you' to the enemy A.I. who I killed.

Yeah I've done it. Was watching "Stephen Fry: Live at the Opera House" and when he finished I clapped. Felt silly and stopped.

It's not that weird if it's a reflex, but if it's a conscious decision it's a little strange.

Breaking Bad's season 3 finale. Things got really tense towards the end and I jumped up out of my seat and clapped and screamed "YEAH!"

...then the show made me feel like a bad human being for being happy about that plot development.

Such a great show.

Anyway, I guess that's not really applause. But does an actual applause when you're just watching something on TV? I've seen people stand up and applaud at the end of a movie in a theater and that seemed really weird to me.

I seem to clap at the TV if the onscreen characters are clapping themselves. It sort of makes me feel more in the movie, if that makes sense.

I've never applauded my television, but I do tend to yell at it a lot. Mainly during reality type shows when the contestants on are being dumb, or a bellend. Since producers seem to intentionally cast as many dumb bellends as possible it spend about half the show yelling at the television. I know they can't hear me, but it is very therapeutic.

I (almost) never clap at my t.v. Anything that would get a clapping response from me in public gets a couple nods, a smile/smirk and a "yes" or "nice" (the amount of i's in "nice" is situational) said calmly when I see it happen on t.v.

Edit: Had to add "almost" because I felt the "once or twice" option was better than the "never" option because I probably did it once or twice and forgot about it. Okay I overlooked the "not that I remember" option.

Well that's a bit odd, but compared to people shouting at the TV during a sports game, not that bad. You just get into the Daily Show like some people get into sports. I never do either though.
