Apple recently won a lawsuit against Samsung and now the iPhone 5 has launched.
But the iPhone 5 is very expensive as is the 4S while Samsung builds affordable phone with Android and so do several other companies.
So if Apple starts building cheap phones with a single or dual core processor, cheaper GPU, smaller screen and lower quality camera and put the iOS in it and called it the iPhone Pocket or iPhone Mini would you buy it?
For people who buy this stuff near launch date, would you stop buying the actual expensive iPhones?

It was called the iPhone 3S. Apple continued to manufacturer it long after the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S were released. They actually just announced they were going to stop making it.

By Apples pricing structure the amount of stuff they would have to downgrade or remove for me to consider their products priced reasonably enough to consider purchasing I'd be getting a phone that's two tin cans connected by a piece of string or the iCan if you like.

I'd like to share what I think about this, so let me refer you to my spokesperson:

Richard A. Kiernan said:
There are reasons beyond the price why I don't buy Apple products, and one of them is the lack of hackability present in the devices. I like as few restrictions on my computer devices as possible, and Apple doesn't fulfill that requirement.
It seems I've subconsciously hired him to say exactly what I want to say, better than I can. So, as per our agreement (I hope)

The price of apple products is only one of many reasons that I don't use them. Even if they just straight up reduced the price on all of their products to make them the same as the competition (ie, made their computers cost the same as computers from other manufacturers with similar hardware), I still wouldn't buy them.

I wouldn't buy their phones, because I have no needs in a phone other than talking and texting. I wouldn't buy their MP3 players, because my Cowon J3 does everything I want it to, and better than any iPod at that. I wouldn't buy their computers because they really aren't designed for gaming.

So no, I wouldn't buy apple budget products.

I bought them cause I got a small discount from my study at them. Bought a 3GS and a Macbook Pro then.

As soon as I finish the course they are going on Ebay and I'll buy a proper laptop + Android phone for it.

Personally I think it's absurd, they sell stuff at three times the price and get away with it.

I am largely indifferent. If an iphone is better suited to what I do then I would consider buying one, even with the pricetag. If a cheaper version was adequate then I would consider that. Things cost a fortune to make, and so they sell at an inflated price for a while, and then they figure out how to make them more cheaply. Same with all new shit that comes out.

What people consider better is often just a case of pretentious 'down with the man, tying me into one brand' sort of kneejerk reaction, or just looking at stats and figures without thinking of things like user friendly stuff, and how well it functions as a phone. It's just a phone, it doesn't matter, there are more important things to rage about.

I have very little in the way of brand loyalty outside of handbags and trainers/sneakers. So if it works and looks good I might well go with it.

Pretty much. Why would anyone want a trimmed down iPhone for roughly the cost of other phones which are quite comparable to the real deal?

But even pushing that aside, no, I wouldn't touch an Apple product. The iPhone works well enough, but I absolutely despise itunes and I dislike how closed off their products are. I want to be able to tweak whatever the hell I want if I choose to. I also quite honestly prefer the UI of Android devices having used both enough to compare them pretty much side by side. While I may be able to get behind some of Apple's design philosophy with the iPhone (namely shooting for something simple and intuitive), it's got the usual Apple quirks which run counter to that that make me hate their computer OS as well.

Haha, they should call it the 'icheap' /bad joke

Anyhow, OT, I (personally) wouldn't bother. Why not just get an Android phone if that's the case? I have a 'budget' android phone and it works pretty damn great, serving me well for almost 2 years now.

Apple... budget?

On a more serious (grrrrr) note, I'd probably give them a go, but I'm not keen on Apple at the best of times.

I would never buy an Apple product myself. I use an iPhone 4S that I won in a contest. But will not get any after this.

So there is a lot of iHate going on around the Escapist.
I thought that since most people on the Escapist like Nathan Fillion is a fan of iPhone as is Stephen Colbert, I thought there would be some support for it here.

Even the iPhone 5 still runs on a dual core CPU.
I didn't know that. I assumed that since the Galaxy S3 had a quad-core the iPhone did too.
