I am an...aged gamer. Not too old, but I do remember the good ol' days. Anyway, I have been on a backwards compatibility kick on my 360. Things like Pro Wakeboarding, Republic Commando, Armed and Dangerous, and a few others. As I play these games a few different things pass through my head. At first its like "Yes! This game is awesome and I love it as much as I used to!" Then after a little while, its like "This game is cool, but it has lost some of its edge and awesomeness." As I play longer, my memories of how awesome these games are kind of fade. They are still great games, they just lose something as time passes. Now to the main question, does the same apply to the Wii and the classic games on the Wii console? I really want to play Super Mario 64 and F-Zero X again, but without a N64, this is my only choice. However I am a cheap man, and I don't want to waste too much money reliving these good old days, but these and other games are so awesome that they are begging to be played again. What are your thoughts?

P.S. Please excuse my over-use of the word awesome but I have lost my thesaurus.

I said a few gems here and there, but it depends on how much exactly you're charged. Personally I find that nostalgia is over rated and after a short time, that which seemed like a good idea, is suddenly decidedly less fun than I'd imagined.

I'll talk openly about emulators because I still have a few boxes in my attic stuffed with games for the NEW, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc. As long as I have those, I can run them on an emulator all I want.

Presumably you owned these games that you're looking to replay, yes? Then it's legal.

I still have all of my classic consoles around, I don't use them though. I think it's best to just have fond memories than to actually replay something and find you were <word I've forgotten> it and it it wasn't that great. or it may just be that time of your life you wish to relive. I find it very hard to play old games and watch old films from my past alone it just makes me feel like I'm trapped in a time warp.

You should try to get a good game pad when you...discover the sinful and unlawful "emulators", of which I know nothing.
The emulators aren't unlawful, it's the ROMs that are questionable in legality. :p

I'm quite sure many emulators incorporate code which cannot be found legally, possibly involving reverse engineering or requiring the console's bios to run. But don't let me put you off, there is about as much risk of being reprimanded for photocopying a page from a book.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Thanks guys for your input. Would a 360 controller plugged up by a recharging cord into USB work? Or do I need something more PC friendly?

360 controllers can sync to a PC, but you need a special unit to make that work (a wireless sensor is usually best, any game store would sell one).

Hooking it up through the charger will charge it, but you can't play that way, sadly.

Just get a Logitech Chillstream and a driver mod for it called XBCD 360 Version. Then you have a pad that's identical to the 360 pad that was made for Windows gaming and a mapper utility to program the buttons as you see fit. I use that configuration with my emulators and it works flawlessly.

With the price those old games are at, and seeing as that a lot of the games have also been "discontinued" like, Fallout 2, they can be "free" too...totally worth it.

-Time has a lot to do with it, I think gamers have really been spoiled lately, but if you've still got appreciation for the old then you'll love those classics.

I read the poll wrong and clicked the "Hell yeah!" option, not noticing it only applied to the Wii. If you want to relive the good 'ol days, use your gear from the good 'ol days. I still have a desk full of old computer stuff dating back to Wasteland, and a small plastic rectangle with my old N64 Cartridges. I play them and enjoy them. If you don't want to bother with emulators and get a more full experience, and wasn't around then, go ahead and buy some old games, most of them are still great. If you were around then, why have you been throwing stuff away?

Also, since when was Republic Commando old?

When I first got my Wii over a year ago, when I would get drunk I would browse the Wii shop channel. I would see games and think "ohh man I have to play that again" would download and only play a few minutes before going 'ehh' and forgetting about them. Now I have something like 15 VC games of which only 2 that I played all the way threw( zelda LTTP, paper mario).

Sometimes nostalgia is best left alone.

See I don't have my old stuff. And I didn't throw it away either. Its just that when I moved up a generation, the old stuff was broken or I sold it to finance the new (smart for when I was a kid, dumb now that I want them back). I started hardcore on an SNES while the old NES sat in the basement. When I bought a PSX, both the old systems were sold by me and my parents. Then the PSX worked a long time and I aquired an N64. Then the PSX and my games got sold. Then I bought an XBOX, and my N64 got sold I think. As for my Dreamcast, it is sitting in a plastic tote somewhere in the garage. Hell the only reason I got a 360 was to replace my old XBOX that finally died. I wish I had them all back, but I am afraid that they would only be collecting dust. You know what I mean, since I don't have them around I get an itch to play them. But if I start trying to relive the glory days, they may not be as glorious as I remember. Using the backwards compatibility on my 360 I just have to rent the game. But I am afraid of spending money on the VC on my Wii to play games from way back when, just to be dissappointed. Squarewave seems to have experienced it first hand. I have a Gamecube so I have a controller for it so that part is covered. As for Republic Commando, old may not be the correct word, but last gen it is. The current state that games are in nowadays, three years can be considered old. I prefer to think of it as classic. Is that more applicable?
