Are there "great" works still being made? I mean this in the "Ulysses", "Citizen Kane", "Hamlet" sense of a great work. Now I'm not looking for a debate on whether any of those were great, or if they're overrated, I'm wondering are there any books being written, or movies being made or music being written today or in the last 10, 20 years that will be held up as one of the great works of art of all time?

You can throw in games if you want, but a) don't try to turn this into a games as art debate, and b) consider the fact that really, for something to be considered a great work of art, it does tend to have to have a deeper merit than function (i.e. Super Mario Bros. is a great game, it doesn't transcend its medium to give a view of the human condition).

If you do have a suggestion, back it up with a little insight, don't just name something and leave it at that.

Yes, most of the time works of literature, cinema, or even games are not considered "great works" until quite a while after they are made.

Absolutely great works are being created today that will carry on for ages (how long no one knows). Time has simply erased all the terrible works from the past and kept the great "Ulysses, Citizen Kanes, and Hamlets". Look at 1984 written over 60 years ago and still a well referenced work. Lord of the Rings is/will be a classic as well as perhaps a song of ice and fire. As I said though the reason we think all these great works are no longer being made is because we see the garbage and fill between all the classics were as history has removed all the filler and left us with jewels.

Yeah, this.
We have no way of knowing at the moment.
Just as the things we say right now are great works may not be.
Only the future will tell.

I can see Inception being regarded as a classic action movie in many years' time. Perhaps mostly by film buffs, or perhaps generally, but it WAS a very good movie (IMO) with just the right amount of unique flair. Then again, it's hard to tell at this time - as the others in this thread have pointed out, it takes many years for things to be recognised as classic.

I'm pretty sure Muse's Origin of Symmetry album, from 2001, is already regarded as a classic in some circles. Not at Sgt. Pepper or Dark Side of the Moon levels, though - more akin to the love for Nevermind or OK Computer. I think it's better than both (and the other two are both very good).
