Yes, they are an expression of ideas. They are intended to bring out emotions in their audience. If that isn't a worthy definition of art, I don't know what is.

They can be.
Far from all are however, most are just spat out for the devs and publishers to make money on.

I second this statement. I mean, if random colors on a canvas for some of those "what the ehck am I looking at" images are art, then games can be too.

Yes, absolutely, unquestionably.

Storytelling is art, and video games are storytelling, thus video games are art. It's simple and obvious, and only ignorance says otherwise.

Yes they are an art medium...even though most of them use either the color brown, gray or dark green just in different shades.

Where is the "Can be" option?

Making games is an art, but I doubt the latest in a long line of generic FPSs really qualifies as artistic expression, it's more business. Nobody thinks plain paper is an art after all, even through there is an art to the process of making it.

Another example. I could weld up a frame for a tank, or well anything for that matter. If I take the same materials and make a sculpture then I have art, what changed? Well the function and form of the piece changed.

I was goin to say ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Heavy Rain, and okami were all art but it's more like they emulate art.

It sounds a little too pretentious to argue though so for the sake of not sounding like a pretentious ass hole sipping his frapcinno talking to you plebs, I'm going to say that they are varying degrees of art.

Some are, some aren't compare Halo to Heavy Rain in the form of art. World of Goo to Half-Life 2, very different games, very different measure of artistic merit

Well games are not art in themselves, their main idea is not to pass a message/emotion trough aesthetics. But just take a look at a game and you will see that it is full of art. Well you HAVE to call the graphics we find in games art, or nothing at all would be art. omg i hate my freaken obligatory art lessons

Anything can be considered art. I personally think some game are art, but only really good or thought provoking ones. E.g. bioshock, shadow of the colossus.

Anything that can be used to express thoughts and ideas can be classified as art, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it is. While 2001: A Space Odyssey and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are both movies, one can be considered art while the other clearly isn't. In other words, just as with any form of media, a video game can be a work of art, but all games certainly aren't/

Shadow of the Colossus and perhaps games like Bioshock are most definitely art in my opinion. Deciding whether or not a game is an art form is down to choice. However there is art in all video games, it's just a question of whether or not to consider the actual medium as an art form.

Overall my definition of art is something with a philosophical meaning behind it. Video games are more like playable James Bond flicks.
What about games like Bioshock or Shadow of the Colossus? Those had philosophical meaning behind them.

OT: Some are art, but much like with everything else, 90% of them are crap.
