When it comes to games genres (quite a few in fact, not all) there are usually two categories of which to put them in, those that focus on realism and those that focus on arcade, take Gran Turismo 5 vs Split / Second for example, or WWE Smackdown vs Raw vs WWE Superstars. You get my drift.

So do you prefer realism in your games or arcade frantics?

It really depends on the style the game is going after and what im in the mood for.
Sometimes i want to play a more skillful game that actually requires me to focus on more realistic concepts(GT) and sometimes i just want to destroy everything in my path to secure first place(Burnout)

I'm more of an arcade person. Realism is nice, but it often doesn't have the "fun factor" I'm looking for. This is why I am quite enjoying Bulletstorm; nothing like watching a goon's head explode while the rest of body turns into smoldering ashes. :D

Bit of both. I love MLB the Show for its realism, and love The Bigs for its over-the-top arcadeyness where you can blast home runs off the jumbotrons. Both categories have their place and their uses, and limiting one's enjoyment over something like that seems needless to me.

I tend to veer more towards arcadey experiences, but there are definitely cases where I like realism. In fact, I find that intelligent use of select realistic aspects can enhance otherwise arcadey experiences.

Why is arcade the opposite of realism? Arcade games are played in arcades they have don't have any special designation beyond that.

I prefer fun games. It doesn't matter if they're arcade or realistic just as long as they're fun. arcade games usually go to fun whereas realistic games usually go towards being more real. and alot of the time making things realistic often makes things harder(such as hardcore mode in fallout 3:new vegas).

I voted arcade but the thing is, i can have just as much fun with either game type. The thing that annoys me is when games set down their rules and then proceed to break them. If the game is trying to be perceived as realistic, then it should not have blatantly unrealistic mechanics. Falling 20 ft and not breaking my leg is a completely ridiculous concept to me. Granted, the mechanics that are present also have to contribute to making the game more fun. Being able to fart para-shoots is also very unrealistic, but it's less so than being able to take that fall and walk away. That doesn't mean that there isn't a still better solution though. With enough creativity, you could make the game both fun and reasonably realistic. Perhaps the soldiers could have grappling hooks and ropes that they throw behind them to catch the edge of the building as they jump off and repel down?

Realistic games have very well known rules, as they are meant to mimic what would happen in real life, it's glaringly obvious when they fail to do this. If i understand your meaning when you say arcade games, these are games that don't care weather or not they're realistic, Mario, Pac-Man, (basically anything that's not meant to be realistic)but they still set down rules. If i see that same 20 ft fall in a Star Wars game (EG. SWBF) then i really could care less, stranger things have happened in that universe and there are a multitude of obvious explanations. But when a rocket trooper shoots you at point blank range with his rocket launcher, or drops mines or det packs on your face, I scream bullshit if TK's are off. These are completely ridiculous tactics and should not be possible (btw these guys are walking away from these massive explosions while i die). The game says that explosions hurt, we all know this, these are weapons meant to take out tanks and they're being fired into the ground right at the shooters feet and he simply walks away. Yes, a large part of my complaint is that these tactics are being exploited and generally considered extremely cheap and impossible to defend against (if they manage to get that close to you). But the lack of realism in this case is a fairly big flaw in the game(and in this case, the realism of the game is relative to the universe that it takes place in).

Depends on whether I'm in the mood for something in-depth and immersive or something brainless and twitchy.

Pretty much the same way I pick films to watch.

Depends, i'm into my racing games where id drive without the assists so i would have to say realism, but if it's something like final fantasy i don't want realism, i want..well fantasy lol.

What would your chosen terms be then for, say, the difference between a simulation game like Madden and a game like NFL Blitz?

Arcade style, to me, means that you score points for doing silly/awesome/ridiculous things instead of just for killing enemies or obtaining objectives. I'd like a medal for knocking out more windows than anyone else with a brick, or for squatting on health packs. Timesplitters does it right. Of course, an arcade type game still needs to be consistent in the execution of it's mechanics, otherwise it becomes chaos.

I love realism in shooters a lot more, I can't really say for other genres, though.

I get a hell of a lot more immersed when I know the dangers of one bullet and need to rely on my teammates to survive, and to ensure their survival.

I enjoy the occasional game of CoD, but being able to walk casually through a room unloading entire magazines into groups of Russians and soak up bullets like a sponge, it takes me out of the gritty war feel of the setting.

I play a bit of both but, if I had to pick one it would be arcade. I find those types of games more enjoyable than 'realistic' games. Bleh.

I honestly can't stand realistic racing games. I'd much rather play Blur or Hot Pursuit than I would Forza.

As for any other genre, it usually depends on the game.
