Are you happy?

That?s a broad question and most of you will provide a broad answer.

The odd thing about happiness is the answer you provide is not concrete, what you answer today man not be your answer tomorrow or even an hour from now. Happiness is incomparable and contextual. But nevertheless a real and solid emotion.

Are you happy? What makes you happy? Consider the other end of the spectrum, what makes you sad?

For me, I suppose I am. Although I?ve learnt that happiness should be gauged at the end of your life, I figure that happiness is essentially an accumulation of everything you've experienced. However when you?re near the brink of death you?ll probably just delude yourself into believing you are anyway out of some desperate attempt to ease the finality of death.

For now... I?m happy I?m alive, my hearing is beginning to fail even at a very young age and I?m far from rich. But I?m content with what I have and I know in the future I am ambitious and competent enough to achieve more than I already have. I suppose what makes me happy is the prospect of the future. When I?m older and the prospects of the future begin to shorten I will have to re-evaluate my life. Until then I?m happy enough to know I?m not sad.

Hope that makes sense.

For how awkward this can be, I can't tell. What, in fact, is happiness?
That is a very good question.

Okay try to imagine that an alien came down from out of space with no knowledge of human nature. It sees the word 'happy' and asks you to describe what it is. What do you say? You'd use examples - "Happiness is the feeling you get when you get your paycheck" The alien may know what paycheck means and understand the value of money and all the technical things, but it will never understand what an emotion is not because it's an alien, but simply because you lack the means to describe happiness. Trying to describe happiness is like trying to describe the color yellow. Unless they have the means to see or in this case feel it, they can never know what it is. Because happiness is a universal emotion among animals, we don't need to describe it because we can all experience it.

So to answer your question RIOgreatescapist, there is no answer I can give you.

Neutral. What is so good with this world that I should be happy? What is so bad that I should be unhappy?

I'm not overly unhappy, but I'm not happy either, so I'll fill in 'somewhat disagree'. I just miss certain things and people (especially people, and one person in particular) in my life, too much to be happy.

I try to make the best out of everything so I won't drop into a pit of depression again. Went there, don't want to go back, but I can't say I'm happy.

I'm watching my life fall apart around me. My wife is leaving me, I might be flat broke by April, I'm about to have six weeks away from the comforting stability of classes at college, and my chances of getting a job in this economy are near nil.

But at the same time, I believe in "when life gives you lemons..." and I'm looking forward to the challenge of life after everything I thought was part of it is gone. Making new friends, becoming more self-reliant after letting myself lapse into marital entropy, maybe even losing a few pounds (I'm not even overweight, I could just be in better shape.) I have no doubt in my mind that I myself will turn out fine no matter what happens...32 years on this Earth have taught me to believe in myself.

(and if all else fails, I'll apply for on-campus housing at the University of Nevada and have my own Will Ferrell movie for a life!)

I'm absolutely brilliant at making others feel better, but not the same in reverse. I'd have to say a three.

On the upside, you may have a pie in the end. There's no pies in my future *sniff*

Is anyone ever truly happy? I mean sure, I get up, spend some time with my friends, then head out to school, get depressed usually, then my mood rises. So my happiness is very unstable, I have mood swings all the time and I don't really know why.

Mostly sunny with chances of severe life crippling depression.

But it's sunny weather in my brain right now.

I am pretty happy, I guess. Nothing bad is happening, that's a plus.

Side-note:
Here's a little song i wrote,
you might want to sing it note for note,
don't worry, be happy

in every life we have some trouble,
when you worry you make it double
don't worry, be happy

dont worry be happy now
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
aint got no place to lay your head,
somebody came and took your bed,
don't worry, be happy

the landlord say your rent is late,
he may have to litagate,
dont worry (small laugh) be happy,

look at me im happy,
don't worry, be happy

i give you my phone number,
when your worried, call me,
i make you happy

don't worry, be happy

aint got no cash, aint got no style,
aint got no gal to make you smile
but don't worry, be happy

cos when you worry, your face will frown,
and that will bring everybody down,
so don't worry, be happy

don't worry, be happy now...

don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy

now there this song i wrote
i hope you you learned it note for note
like good little children

dont worry be happy

listen to what i say
in your life expect some trouble
when you worry you make it double
dont worry be happy
be happy now

dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry
dont worry be happy
don't worry, don't worry, don't do it,
be happy, put a smile on your face,
don't bring everybody down like this

don't worry, it will soon pass whatever it is,
don't worry, be happy,
i'm not worried

I'm usually just relaxed. Leaning towards happy on most days but never quiet there, unless i'm hanging out with friends or doing something I enjoy.

I'm neutral. Generally happy when having an intelligent conversation with someone who enjoys the same.

I'm happy.

I used to be very unhappy, but now I'm happy.

Just... generally positive.

One can have one's aggregate of happiness be positive and still be unhappy, a positive aggregate just makes it easier to be happy. The same holds with the opposite. Happiness is a current emotion because it is not rational.
