So (if you carry around a backback) how do you carry it? Hanging on one shoulder? Both shoulders? Carried in arm? Etc?

And why do you carry it that way, and what future health (mainly back) problems do you think will result, if any?

No particular reason for this thread, other than to see the tendancies of people on the escapist...

EDIT: GODDAMNIT I HIT ENTERINSETEAD OF THE APOSTROPHY AND IT DELETED THE POLL!

Yeah, the poll was going to be
-Messanger bag
-"Real" backback worn properly
-"Real" backback worn like messanger bag
-Rolly backback
-Messanger bag worn around the neck because I don't have any arms

Well before I graduated to an awesome satchel, I had a backpack that I wore over one shoulder. I must've been stronger than I thought because it was chock-full of my school books and I seemed to be the only guy who could lift it.

I have a bag with one strap slung over my right shoulder. I hate backpacks with a passion and the feeling is mutual.

Sorry man, what is done is done. Why not edit in your quiz to your OP? People will still pick an option but it won't be as nice and tidy as a real poll.

I used to carry a backpack right up until I was about in 8th grade. I'd wear it on one shoulder when I traveled a short distance and both shoulder when I had to ruck the few miles home. Because my locker was on the other side of the fucking school I didn't have time to go out, grab my stuff and make a mad dash for my next class before the bell would ring, I would load it up with a lot of stuff at once.

So around the 6th grade (when we started having to carry our books and no just grab them from a shelf) I decided instead to just load my backpack up with everything, and because of that (teamed with very uncomfortable desk chairs) I still have to fight the urge to slouch in my chair when I sit down.

But then I saw the light and got myself a messenger bag. A nice, comfortable, durable, leather messenger bag with a magnet-held front flap, room for a laptop and charger, books, and anything I needed. Now I use nothing but my messenger bag, and it's worked for a good while now.

Not to mention it looks good. Messenger bag, brown leather jacket, librarian glasses. It needless to say, "bring the boys to the yard."

Hey I just ninja'd you, did that right before you posted (or was it after? Stupid internet lag).

That's a great idea anyway.

I have a messenger bag (with usually an abnormally heavy laptop in it) over my right shoulder. I've been thinking about getting a backpack again, but I'm too lazy to go out and buy one. The backpacks I have at home are too small for my laptop.

This and I used it as a battering ram to get through the halls when the place was crowded.

I use a backpack, because my books tend to be heavy, and a messenger bag would fall apart within a month. It's not as big of an issue now that I live on campus and have the ability to carry only the books for the class I'm currently going to, but even with heavy duty hiking backpacks I used to go through at least one a year, and a normal backpack lasted for closer to half a term. The one I'm using now is a hiker's day pack, which came from walmart.

It looks like a normal school backpack, but the nylon is a heavier grade than normal, the straps are reinforced with extra fabric, and there's an extra pocket for what they call a "hydration system," which is basically a plastic bag that has a long tube coming out of it, which you can use to drink out of without having to take your hands away from whatever it is they're doing. It sounds lazy, but I think it's primarily aimed at people who go on long distance bike rides. It has room for whatever books I need for class, plus my laptop which goes inside it's own bag before going in the backpack. For obvious reasons, I wear it properly on both shoulders.

That said, on days when I don't have time to pack it properly and I'm not likely to need anything but my laptop, which I use for all of my note taking, I just take the laptop in it's case, which I guess could be described as a messenger bag with room for nothing but a laptop and some accessories.

If I'm carrying a lot and walking large distances then I wear it properly on both shoulders, tight and high, but if I'm just carrying a few things and require frequent access, like if I'm shopping around town, then I loosen one strap and sling in over my right shoulder.

In crowded situations (e.g on a busy shopping day or travelling on the Tube) I'm always wary of hitting people/things with my backpack on my back or slug over my shoulder (and I'm also wary of thieves behind my back), so I'll carry it "reversed" (i.e. my right arm through the left shoulder strap) and keep it tight against my side, tucked under my right arm.

I use a "real" backpack, and I carry it properly, unless I'm only going to walk a small distance.

I try to avoid carrying a backpack around whenever possible; I'd really prefer just to have a briefcase, because backpacks are huge and bulky and heavy and they look incredibly stupid. Once of the most horrible people I've ever met once said that "there are only two situations where it is appropriate for a man to wear a backpack: camping and combat. Your philosophy lecture counts as neither." As horrible a person as he was, he was right about that.

I usually go for my messenger bag, because if I'm carrying things it's not going to be much. If I need to carry more things or heavier things, then I go for the "real backpack" and worn on one shoulder until it's uncomfortable and needs to be worn properly.

Try to wear it on both shoulders. I'm afraid someone will knock into it and make it spill out. May need a new one. This one just broke on me XD

I have a "real" bookbag that I wear on my right shoulder...

...wearing it on my left shoulder just seems... unnatural...
