That depends entirely on how you define "best". Answer that, and the "game of the year" trophy will be quite easy to give out.
Left 4 Dead 2 for me. Fantastic gameplay, superb presentation, and it's ABOUT ZOMBIES. I love zombie games. <3

So many outstanding game title this year, I'd have to go with Batman:AA though, game was sublime.
Left for Dead 2 is quite awesome. I enjoyed Borderlands, and the rest of the list is also remarkable, but honestly, I really did love Brutal Legend. A lot.
It fulfilled most, if not all, of my expectations. Sure, I wanted it to be longer, and I would've enjoyed a more adventure-oriented game like a metal Zelda game, but I'm damn pleased I have a multiplayer game like that to play now. Great soundtrack, good story, amazing visuals, etc.
Now if we could just get some single player DLC...

This really shouldn't be a poll, because of the vast opinions regarding it and how many different games come out in a freakin' year.

I think Assasins Creed 2 is gunna sit in my Best of 2009 slot. It did exacly what a sequel should do, improve on its faults and make the good stuff even better. Now to mention the graphics are just gorgeos (spelling?).
MW2 is in the top 5 for me but a true best game never really has one of those "I hate your guts" moments that MW2 is really starting to get. The Model 1887's are just retartedly accurate to retarted range. And you die too fucking easy, its a love hate game. Some days its fun as hell to play but others I feel like breaking the controler over my knee.
Truthfully if it was up to me, the Orange Box would be up there, I don't care if it came out a while ago, I have never had a bad moment with the game, and its always fun.
But for the year, AC2 gets my vote.
