I don't know if this specific thread has been done before. But i decided it would be fun to see what kinds of metal other people listen to. Sub genres go under the general genre.

Now, in personal opinion, i love Technical Death Metal. i think it's greater than sliced bread. My reasons for this are because it has a fast tone, amazing guitarists, vocals that can be treated as another instrument, insane drumming, and is one of the genres of music that basically try to recreate what classical artists have done long before.
Some of my favorite tech death bands include:
Necrophagist (popular, a bit over rated)

Dred (new band from Australia, great rhythm. EP is called A Path to Extinction.)

Theory in Practice (just... wow....)

The Shattering (Also a new-ish band, pretty good riffs, clean sound)

Psycroptic (Good rhythm, vocals sound like burps though. Best album is probably Scepter of the Ancients)

Centaurus-A (Probably going to be very popular among the death metal community)

Gorod (Definitely my favorite band of ALL time, [artillery being right behind them ] creative riffs, great vocals, very accurate sound, clean. I RECOMMEND ALL OF THEIR STUFF!!!)

Obscura (very melodic sound)

Sleep Terror (Experimental Technical Death Metal. Guitarist is Luke Jaeger. Very original)

Atheist (Old band, still very popular, alot of jazzy influences, and new album coming up. if you like these guys you would like things like Gnostic, Cynic, and Sceptic)

Amoral (seem thrash influenced to me. their old albums (Decrowning, Wound Creations) were tech death. now they are.. ugh.. power metal.)

De Liruim's Order (I like these guys.)

Neuraxis (I don't listen to them much, but when i do, i really like it. Technical and has some acoustic songs in the "The thin line between" album)

Hieronymus Bosch (All the way from Russia comes this extraordinary, awe - inspiring band. I recommend looking up best album [imo] Artificial Emotions. If you don't look it up, you are seriously missing out on some beautiful and creative music. even if you don't like death metal you might enjoy it.)

I don't really know what subclass my metal fall in, or if it's really metal. I just know I like bands with more intricate guitar work for the most part.
-All That Remains
-Avenged Sevenfold
-In Flames
-Disturbed
-Dragonforce
And some others that escape me right now.

Thank you. Know I know.

And knowing is half the battle!
That said, I think I have to pick "other"

Any love for symphonic metal? Anyone who likes the genre can tell you that hard guitars mixed with haunting violins is a wonderful combination

Look at pre 2008 Nightwish and Epica if you're interested.

That does sound good. And I think Disciple might fall under that area...I know I've heard violins in some of their music.

or just look at Symphony X, which i was going to put Power/Neo-Classical.
But neo-classical isn't very similar to power metal, only lyrically.

I think the best metal predates the rabid subgenrefication of metal. E.g. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, &c.

I associate that era with a lot of variety and experimentation, much of which successfully fed back into the wider world of rock-n-roll. I think it was richer thematically than the stuff that followed.

Quoted for truth. I myself just plain love metal, and can never keep track of all of the stupid subgenres.

Folk metal's my thing, although I don't mind other stuff at all. Come to think of it, part of my liking of this particular subgenre is that it draws from so many others.

Though if I had to pick a particular reason, it'd probably be that the "folk" part gives a catchy melody and the "metal" part provides overall kickass.

My favourite folk metal band would prolly be Korpiklaani, cause they pretty much sold the subgenre to me.

The rant starts here.

And I'm glad you only put 7 subgenres up there. Seriously, when I hear people arguing whether some random song is death metal, death-black metal, death-black-with-a-shade-of-pink metal, or maybe smoked-wiener metal, and then progressing to argue whether the growl in it is grindcore-, death-, or barbiegirl-style, I do get a tad annoyed. When they then start claiming that death-raven-birmingham-grindcore metal is better than death-raven-liverpool-grindcore-fart metal, even though the two sound almost alike, and then claim that whoever doesn't listen to their favourite genre is not a true metalhead, then I stop being annoyed because hey - you can't blame idiots for being idiots.

The rant ends here.

Thanks man. I tried to go with the classic genres, death metal being the newest.

I really like power metal;
-Hammerfall
-Iced Earth
-Hyberia
-Sonata Arctica
-Helloween
-Falconer
-Iron Maiden (they are actually part of NWOBHM, but share many traits of power metal)
-Nightwish (more like symphonic, but it's hard to divide metal into so many sub-categories)

I wouldn't say Avenged Sevenfold are Nu-Metal, more like an 80ish type thing. I don't really know how to describe each of the definitions, so see if you can get my bands:

System of a Down-Nu metal

Metallica-Thrash Metal

Avenged Sevenfold-Above

Disturbed-Nu metal

Dio-Power Metal

Metal bands I don't like:

Dragonforce-Too immature

Bullet for My Valentine-This and anything where the singer just screams nonsensically
Whew, you know your metal and i would be proud of you if you were my son. Bullet for my Valentine fits into a genre of music that ends with "core" which in my definition means anything which the style makes it sound the same and it has lots of breakdowns.
