so, im commiting the double posting sin here, but i recon it not as simple as 1,2,3. they where all great, the first one was the goldeneye killer of the genaration, the second one was traling a little but still addded new weapons, modes and continued the story, the 3rd was epic for fans who loved the story (yes, thats me) and it tied up all the lose ends. and come on, you cant tell me they arnt making halo 4!!! who ever finished the last mission on legendery will know what i mean. the trilogry was great, every fps since then has been modeled off halo. halo rocks. nuff said
I'm not a huge Halo fan but Halo: Combat Evolved was the best of the series, it was well put together, had good action and wasn't crap like 2 and 3 were. I've actually been wanting to play the first one again since 2 had a annoying story that had you bouncing between MC and an alien that dresses in brightly colored armor. 3 I only watched and I'll just keep it "non flame" and say 1 was better in every way besides possibly the multiplayer.
I liked the second one the best with the first being only slightly behind. I did find the third one very disappointing but okay. I really like the Arbiter and the Covenant in general so I guess thats why I prefer the second slightly more and why the third was disappointing (that and the whole Cortana and Chief love thing, creepy) in my eyes.

Halo 1... campaign AND online.
If you're reading this and saying to yourself "You couldn't play Halo 1 online", please go and research XBC & GameSpy Arcade.
Halo 1 will remain the best of the three with the most balanced gameplay and minimal lag for "online play" really being moreso a system linked game over the internet.
Halo CE has far too many mods & host-advantage to even consider it good online play.

For me the levels appeared to be copy pasted onto each other, such as library, and some levels were just recycled, Keyes and Two Betrayals.fix-the-spade said:

But i still vote Combat Evolved, despite the map being recycled, the Assault on the Control Room and Two Betrayals levels are my favourites.
First one in all aspects. The multiplayer is the most fun, the campaign was actually kind of worth playing through, and it was a breath of fresh air for console shooters.
Halo: Combat Evolved was the best one in my opinion. Halo 2 seemed rushed, and Halo 3 was over hyped.
Halo 1 was the Halo I had the most fun on, so I'll go with Halo: CE. I loved that game a lot. But I think Halo: ODST might become my favorite Halo game...
