http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/starcraft2/video/6215996/battle-net-panel-highlights

The top link pretty much explains it all

" Eurogamer has the story. In short:
As part of Blizzard's ambitious plans for the new version of the Battle.net online platform to launch alongside StarCraft II, the company's design chief Rob Pardo [has] revealed plans to allow the mod community to sell content on a StarCraft II Marketplace after launch.
The Marketplace would be a forum for publishing and downloading both free and premium maps. "A portion of the revenue" from premium maps would go to the creator
It is unclear what criteria a map would be permitted to become "premium".

The news comes from Battle.net's general reveal at Blizzcon, which Eurogamer are also reporting. Alternatively, there's a video on Gamespot."

Any one else think this is a sh** idea and should be terminated immediately?

It's a very interesting concept that seems hit or miss. I'm personally not sure if many people will go for paid maps unless they have a lot to offer, and even then it sounds like something difficult to DRM. If someone has a great idea, someone else will just remake the map as a free version.

Why should I pay for something I got for free whilst playing Starcraft 1? I might as well just keep on playing SC1 and never bother with number 2.

It seems that Blizzard is taking example from Infinity Ward(Charging more for less) and Capcom(Forcing people to pay for content already on disc). I used to hold Blizzard in high regards but nowadays it seems all they care about is money.

Edit: I stand corrected, now stop quoting me.

Not sure where this comes from, according to the article, the plan is to let the modding community sell premium maps they've created on their own, not Blizzard. The content isn't already on your disc (well ok it is sort of, as it's the world editor, but you didn't sink however many hours into building the map and tweaking it's triggers and events to perfection). Generally when things go from Free -> Pay For, their quality improves, as if people want to get paid, they have to do a real job, so why should you pay for something you got free in SC1? Because you didn't get it in SC1, there wasn't a central hub where you could browse and preview custom made maps from third party modders. I personally probably won't be purchasing anything from this Marketplace, I'm a campaign snob mostly, but I'll reserve judgment on it until it's actually in place.

I guess you're right. I still don't like the idea of paying extra when I've already payed for the game itself(And it's other 2 expansions)

I actually really like the idea. It allows the people who put a lot of time and effort into maps to sell them for a small bit, and looking at the battle.net communities, this seems to be a fine model. Most maps will still likely be free, but people will take the incentive and likely put out some great stuff because of this.

Just think of games(maps) like DotA. People would pay for it. Almost everyone who initially was creating the maps are now selling aspects of it through their own companies and custom games. Theres incentive for them to remain with Blizzard now, if they could sell their maps through battle.net.

Well actually, it seems like most of the money would be going to the person who created the map. Its a way of rewarding the modding community for making amazing maps and game variants based on what theyre given.

And hell, modders should get paid for what they do. And its not like it cannot get popular.
If you have Warcraft III, log on to Battle.net and see how many War3 games there are... and how many DotA games there are...

I dunno man, giving modders a legit way to sell their work? I'm not sure I see how that's a bad thing.

I think it's a great idea that is going to be poorly implemented, and is going to hurt the good mods because no one wants to pay for such user-made content. How am I going to know what maps are worth money, and which ones are just passable to sucker someone into a purchase? Just keep them all free so I don't have to worry about bullshit like that.

Besides, what if I find a good map and no one would play it with me because all my friends don't want to pay for it? It's going to segregate the community based on who is willing to pay for maps and who isn't.

I think its a good idea for the very well made maps. But you know noobs will charge for shitty maps. This also limits Starcraft 2's staying power in comparison to Warcraft 3. WC3 is still being played, if only for DotA.

i really don't see whats so bad about rewarding mod/map makers for their work if it kicks ass, plus i watched the blizzcon09 battle.net panel and this premium map stuff will NOT be coming out at launch it will come out in the future.

and have you seen what the SC2 data editor can do?..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYgtRBk9j_g&feature=related (about 2:30s in) and the other examples http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqP0a_ZaNLM&NR=1

and that's just what can be slapped together by developers, just imagine what dedicated modders can do. they will deserve getting paid for it

i think this is a great idea and very very interesting how they implement it.

Total bullshit for the players. Who decides what is 'Premium Content' and what isn't? Chances are people will end up paying for shitty maps which someone decided is better than the others.

I was going to make a lengthy response, but this sums up the gist in a far more polite way.

However, since I'm in a bad mood, I will still exhort everyone to stop bitching.

Starcraft 2 gets released (whenever the heck that becomes a reality, I don't know). A few days later, 93847123043737462 DotA clones vying for a "premium" spot. I called it first.
