I've been playing Left 4 Dead 2 quite a bit recently. I enjoy the game and agree that it is a game best played with actual human partners. However, with each game I have been playing there seems to always be one guy who for some reason takes it upon himself to tell everyone how he thinks everyone else should play the game. I have my own way of playing this game (such as saving health packs until I am "black and white") and I generally have a strategy of what I am going to do. Though if what I am doing doesn't match what one person wants then that person will keep yelling at me until the end of the game.

I usually get into messes where someone is telling me how to walk, when to fire, when to inhale/exhale, etc. If I comply with what they are telling me to do, I die and then I get yelled at for doing what they tell me a fraction of a second off. If I don't do what they tell me to do and die, I get yelled at even harder. If I don't do what they tell me to do and live, I still get yelled at.

Because these given scenarios bug me so much I am careful NOT to tell people what to do. This is basically my rule: I won't tell you how to play the game if you don't tell me how to play the game. I don't care if my partners are making big mistakes or not because I play to just have fun and I'm not enjoying myself taking orders from some stranger. I understand that Left 4 Dead is a team game and that you need to work together well to beat it. I don't have problems with suggestions from others. I'm talking about the people who will yell your ear off if you don't take the pills RIGHT when that person told you to or the person who demands everyone carry a different kind of weapon to make things "even".

So, what about you, friends? What is your opinion of people (particularly online) who tell YOU how to play a game? What do you do?

Depends on how good I am at the game.
If it seems like good advice... I'll probably listen... but if not I'll just happily ignore them.

In TF2 once in awhile we I see a few "we need a few more medics please" or "can we get a demo for that nest" etc, the people who just ask to help win, which I sometimes help, sometimes ignore.

Then there's the guy who screams at everybody, but I just mute them.

Depends..

If your playing left 4 dead and someone asks you to go outside and sacrifice yourself, I would just shout back at him/her.

If your playing competitive TF2 and a demoman requires covering from nearby scouts, sure I'd listen to them.

yeah this. i make suggestions myself but never force it upon someone, if i see someone down, i will toss em my pills or healthpack if needed, and ill nearly always go back unless they tell me to move on (in vs mode) otherwise i try and be as much of a team player possible, but i also hate that person who does this, i am NOT AN AI, i did NOT want to play this game to be your lapdog you can yell at every second just because we are not DOMINATING the game (thats the whole point of l4d2 ai..its sneaky and a fucker)

It depends.

If someone is being rude or unpleasant, I don't really care how good their tactics are, I'll do what I want to do. I was playing TF2 a little while ago with someone who kept going, "god, won't someone switch to Medic? This is such a shitty team, no wonder we're losing, c'mon, just listen to me and we'll start winning, what's wrong with you guys, whine sob moan," so I muted him and went on my merry way.

On the other hand, I've run into people who are clearly better than me and who are trying to get everyone coordinated, but still manage to use words like "please" and "thank you", and who are generally polite and friendly when they're asking people to do things, in which case, sure, I'll do my best.

It's people like that that make me not use my mic and headset when I'm playing online and then I'm lucky if i can find a server that will actually let me play with them because of it. It's an endless cycle I tell you.

Depends on the game and the person I suppose, I mean, there's nothing wrong with people trying to get a team to work together. In some cases though, you need to have everyone following a person's specific orders. In this one mod for the Half Life 2 called Empires, where it's basically a team and this one commander that is voted to be the leader (He plays in RTS mode while everyone else is in FPS), and basically, if you went around doing your own thing, you're going to be a liability for the team. I can't say the same for L4D/L4D2, but if someone that's been playing and knows how to win, I think I'm more inclined to listen to what he says, unless he's being a major jackass.

If you're being a moron and I see you being a moron, especially in team games, I'm going to let you know about it. Nothing worse than doing great in a game but still losing because of moronic teammates. Yes, I'm the guy yelling at you for going 5-20 in Call of Duty. Go play campaign until you can stop sucking my balls.

Depends entirely on the situation, although I'd be tempted to act somewhat defiant and annoy him.

I usually go rogue when I'm playing online but if the...say, squad leader or whatever, is commanding his troops like he should (calm tone, doesn't care if people arent listening to him, open to opinion, good tactics) then I will follow his orders just to show my support to the one person online who actually knows what they are doing.

It really depends on the situation. If i'm playing TF2 for instance and someone seems confident and comes up with a winning strategy i'll go along with it. I do the same thing on rare occassions if I come up with a strong strategy and I want to win. Usually thought I prefer to hop on skype and coordinate small squad tactics with friends.

Also I agree, those people on L4D2 are annoying. I've run into them before and I absolutely can't stand it when people I don't even know bark orders at me and talk to me like i've never played the game before. I tend to either mute the players or become very uncooperative at that point.

It depends on the game. In a game like MW2, no. In a game called Savage 2, where each team has a commander, who is in charge of building stuff, I will listen to the commander, because its his job to coordinate the team. For anybody interested in a rts-fps, Savage 2 is awesome and free.

Well I really only play one game anymore and I know all the regulars. The regulars are exceptional players and so when they're telling the team to do something, I'm usually already on board. Now, when new players start giving orders I tend to get a little pissed because they won't stop spamming their bind.

You have 'depends on the situation', I think you should also have 'depends on the advice' but maybe those two tie in together. At any rate, if the person knows what they're talking about, I'll listen, but if they're just some dumb kid who thinks he knows best, I just mute 'em.

I'm quite experienced at computer games and I generally know what I?m talking about, for example I have lead clan teams and lead in comp etc and have been quite successful, anyone who wants to dispute that then thats fine, there is walking the walk and talking the talk and my 3 trophies show I have done both.

If I?m in a game and I see the team isn't performing well then I will speak up, some people may say that?s bossy but I usually give good sound advice and tactics that win us the match. I don't really care what people think of me, if you have a problem with what I say then mute me but don't be an ass and complain about it when you don't have a clue what you?re talking about. I usually find that people who know me as a regular accept my advice straight away, also get quite a few randoms although you do get the odd person who wont take any advice what so ever, I'm not trying to be a dick im trying to win us the match.
