This has been something that has really been bouncing around in my head for a while so much that I really just need to get the opinions of others.
If you don't know these characters, Brian Robinson is the main character in a series by Gary Paulsen, include Hatchet, The River, Brian's Winter, Brian's Return, and The Hunt. It's a story based off true events (Although not everything happens step for step) where a young boy crashes in a plane and is left stranded in the woods to fend for himself with nothing more than a Hatchet. He eventually comes across/makes several other weapons including a knife, a spear, and a bow. He actually gets really good with the bow and might be considered a master archer.
Katniss Everdeen, on the other hand, is in Susan Collins' Hunger Game Trilogy, which includes The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. Katniss was driven by the loss of her father at an early age, and left with a useless mother and a delicate sister, she had to learn to fend for herself. With the help of her best friend Gale Hawthorne, Katniss learned how to set traps, hunt prey, and become self-sufficient within a forest. After several Hunger Games, in fact, she has even become a hardened killer, ready to kill an enemy without hesitation. Her weapon of choice is, like Brian, the Bow and Arrow, although she is also well suited with a knife.
My question here is, if these two met up within a Hunger Games, who would win? Which of these would be the most skilled with a bow, and if it came down it it, who would win in close range?
Katniss has had plenty of combat with other people, and is therefore the obvious choice at a glance. She's used a bow for half her life for hunting and has even turned it on people in Hunger Games' and almost always come out on top because of it. Even in close range she has proved that she can throw a knife quite well, which could be all she needs for the final blow. Her weakness, however, is relying on her hunting partner Gale. For most of her hunting life, Katniss had Gale to watch her back and help her along the way, and without her, she might lose with that gap by her side.
Brian, on the other hand, has been a lone wolf other than briefly in The River with a totally useless businessman and in The Hunt with a Dog. He learned how to survive on his own, and his hunts are not empty if he is alone, because it's all her needs. While Katniss is skilled with a knife, Brian has other weapons up close, including his knife, hatchet, and his most deadly weapon, the flint-tipped War Lance.
It'd be close, that's for sure. I'd put my money on Katniss for her experience killing people and that she might be a bit more skilled with the bow, but who knows?
But, enough of my babbling. What do YOU think?
