I'm a massive Fallout 3 fan. It was the only game I played for the first 6 months of 2009 and I put over 60 hours into it. But I played Oblivion a year earlier and I just couldn't get into it. I reckon it was because there's was no Megaton-like town after you exit the sewers in Oblivion, a place where you could start a few quests and learn the basics of the game.

Do you think the new Elder Scrolls game can win me over, or is it just a prettier, more polished Oblivion?

I think it might have a shot. I'm more or less where you are, except replace Fallout 3 with Morrowind where applicable. Bethesada can make good exploration-based games, so I think that Skyrim at least has a shot at being good.

With each game they try and refine it. Get rid of bits that didn't work, add bits to improve the overall experience.

If you really didn't like Oblivion, maybe try and borrow Skyrim from a friend or something before you buy it.

Honestly, I say wait. There is absolutely no way anyone can give you an informed opinion until it actually comes out. When it does, then you can look up all the reviews and some gameplay videos to see if it interests you. Or you can borrow it from someone you know or rent it.

I'm telling you. I have an unbelievable knack for telling what's gonna be good or not. Skyrim is going to be incredible. I think Bethesda learned a lot from doing Fallout 3, especially in terms of how to better integrate a tutorial into the actual gameplay. I mean, in Oblivion the game would actually pause to give you a rundown of every mechanicof the game. how many time did Fallout 3 have that? twice? if that.

I've never been a huge TES fan, but of what I've played of Oblivion, I'm going to be getting Skyrim at some point. Maybe not right away, but once the GOTY edition comes out.

I'm currently playing through Fallout: New Vegas (I know, not the same team, but the formula is the same), and the I'm loving the amount of side quests and exploration as well as the sheer amount of loot.

Skyrim will be better at doing those things ten-fold.

It's gonna be awesome.

???

Oblivion had a buttload of towns, all with simple, easy to get the swing of quests.

The tutorial was the first dungeon, and the main quest eased you gently into the mechanics too.

Although I'm not so sure that a game as reroll-intensive as an Elder Scrolls game should have a big tutorial at all. I'm more of a fan of the way that FO:NV did it - character generation, then an optional tutorial. Or Morrowind: fill out some forms, familiarize yourself with the controls while doing that, and then start exploring. Or the game could go the big Oblivion/FO:3 tutorial route, but also give you a quickstart option if you want to change your birthsign without sitting through a bunch of scripted sequences and rat-killing.

Imagine Fallout 3 with no guns, and real authentic monsters of european lore with a beautiful color palette wrapped with amazing graphics and gameplay that make you so immersed you need a diving suit. If you didn't just nerd all over your pants and keyboard then you shouldn't play videogames

The thing that worries me about Skyrim is they might spend too much time polishing the appearance of the game and making it easy for everyone and not enough time on making the game world rich enough.

But I'm betting it will be great.

I hope the story is as in depth and complex as Morrowind. That is all I care for. Oblivion's story was really boring to me. Plus all the oblivion gates got really monotonous after a while.

Here is a Fact list [http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Fact_List] that I use it to keep up with Skyrim.

Maybe some features will sway you or stop you.

I'm sceptical but hopeful at the moment, I don't particularly like what's been confirmed about it so far but I still got a lot of enjoyment out of oblivion despite it's numerous and obvious flaws.

Depends whether "streamlined" means watered down as it usually does or Bethesda manage to pull this one out of the bag.
