Well, can you? [http://games.lumosity.com/chimp.html]

We were looking at this at school and I found it mighty interesting. Of the fifteen or so people in my class, I was the only one who was able to get above two (and even then, I think there was some guessing involved). So far my best score is nine, but what about you?

For discussion value, I'm wondering why I can see the numbers but fourteen or so others can't. Maybe it's something to do with my vision, but it's odd. You'd think that humans generally can or can't; I'm not sure what it would be that differentiates between each individual.

I got five first time. I guess that's not terrible.

edit: tried again, got 6. then tried a 3rd time and got 9. I am satisfied.

Yeah, I've seen the video a few times and I can never see more than two or three numbers. Monkeys have far better visual memory than humans-- probably helpful for swingin' around in the jungle and general monkeying around.

I'm pretty confident that people who are able to recognize many or all of the numbers are either guessing or using some kind of strategy that allows them to make the most educated predictions possible-- human visual memory is biologically limited.

Huh. Well, I promise you that I'm not guessing at all, most of the time I see every number. It is a memory test, and I've always been able to remember certain events in great detail, so maybe it's something to do with that?

9.

I'm beginning to worry myself ... because I also remembered the exact numbers as well, saying them in my head as I click them

6 first time. Not too shabby if I do say so my self.
Just out of intrest, how many times has the chimp done this? It says that the chimp averages 8.

Actually, I just clicked the link-- I probably should have done that before posting the first time. I thought your post was referring to the video of the monkey playing the game and didn't realize you had linked to a similar game. The game you've linked to is significantly easier than the test they show in the video, which has 9 or 10 numbers each time instead of 5.

I was able to get like 3 of them-- I can see how something like that could get easier with practice. But I think a person would have to beat this test to claim that their visual memory is better than that of a monkey, and I am still fairly confident that humans are hopelessly limited in their ability to do so.

I have less of an issue of remembering them as much as I have trouble looking at all of them in the 1-3 frames (60Hz display, so about 1/20th of a second tops).
literally blinked and missed one.
hell, remembering all of them in 1/3 of a second would be child's play.
maybe even 1/6th, 1/10th would be tricky though.

Am I the only one who thought of masturbation when reading the topic-title? I can't be the only one with a dirty mind...

Anyway, I got 0 on my first try. It doesn't help either that I haven't slept well in ages. Can't be bothered with practising.

I got zero right the first time, mostly cause I was getting kind of angry. The second time through, my score jumped to 8. I'm sure I could get higher if I tried again.
