my fellow people of the escapist,

I am a student at the university of twente (in the Netherlands)and currently in the process of finishing my bachelor. For my bachelor project I chose to start a firm based upon a recent development made by our research group.

Our firm focuses on the sales of 3D-printers, as you might know 3D-printers come in a wide range of varieties. From small, cheap and inaccurate devices to the mind bogglingly advanced.
You can buy these printers but average cost soon exceed ?1000,- for low-end printers and budget models are often tiny and extremely slow. High-end models will cost you upwards to ?50000,- and have fixed dimensions.

We are planning to change that, obviously I can not divulge in detail what our strategy will be but we intend to give our customers the option to customize their products to a certain degree while at the same time providing our products at lower prices than our current competitors.
For applications you should look at constructing models(ships, planes, cars, warhammer, etc.) and replacing parts and small tools. The only limit is your imagination and your budget (this includes printing with metals).

This is were we need your help,
we need to know how big our customers segment is and what our customers would want.
So I would like to ask you some question:

-Why would or would you not buy a 3D-printer?
-What would you use a 3D-printer for(models, components, replicas, etc.)
-What size printer would you want? Keep in mind the size of what you are going to print.
-If you are into model building, would printing the components yourself give added value?
-If you are into model building, what do you value most?
-Is accuracy important?

I would really appreciate it if some of you reacted.
Regards,

Perhaps approach businesses, maybe those in engineering and parts designers, if you haven't? I'm sure some would be fine with taking a few minutes to answer what types of things they look for in 3D printers and price point. Make sure they know it is just for a course in college so they don't think you are doing a cold call sales pitch.

Problem is that I wouldn't buy any model due to it not really being needed in my life. I have a feeling many others on this site won't have a need for such a product. Thus none of us could knowledgeable state which model would be needed and which price point sounds fair.

I think it would be a fun toy, but that's probably not it's purpose.
I wouldn't buy one based on price and because I probably wouldn't use it beyond the first day I got it.

thanks, but the thing is that our plan is not to sell to businesses. we are trying to bring the 3D-printer into the home of the "common folk" and this site is a good way for us to see if people see a need themselfs or if we need to show them the need. (the users of a modeling site for example showed great interest while you guys don't realy care for it yet)

so even if people decide that they don't want one that is valuable information to us.
