What is your opinion on censorship?
Personally I hate it but it serves a good cause even though it doesn't even work for some people, I'll give you a reason why.
One day I watched "Silent Hill" the movie on T.V. It was censored so there was no gore in the movie so It was impossible to get scared (Which goes against the whole reason why I was watching it).
A few weeks later I watched it again with my brother with the censor off.
Like the first time I watched it I was unfazed unlike my 19 year old brother who was complaining that I shouldn't be acting so brave when I was just as scared as him o_o.
It doesn't have to be just censorship on T.V., it can be censorship on anything such as games and the Internet.

Some censorship is insane.

I saw a music video yesterday before 9pm and half of it ahd to be censored out. Why even show it if it'll be 50% censored?

I once watched a movie that my Dad said had the best shoot out ever (it was an FBI movie based on real event - someone remind me of the name please) and the TV channel censored out the half hour shoot out, which was what the movie was based around so there was no point.

Other censorship I'm ok with, like swears and gore etc. to keep some semblance of innocence in today's youth.

Retarded.

Censorship is delaying the inevitable. You just can't keep children from bad things. It's impossible unless you lock them up in a coffin and bury them... alive.

It really depends on the type of censorship. "Edited" movies or games aren't really a problem, as long as I know I'm getting the "kiddy"-version. Bleeping out "profanity" in music pisses me off to no end, less so for (spoken word) television but that's still silly.

"Real" censorship, in the we're blocking websites with information you can't have way, is always a bad thing. This includes banning books and any other ban on anything that's not inherently illigal (Blocking kiddyporn and the like is not really censorship in my world)

The first time I saw Silent Hill I was with my best friend in her lounge room during various parts of the film she would bury her head in my chest because she just couldn't bring herself to watch it. I was unfazed, people who are scared by that stuff crack me up XD.

OT though, censorship is complete bullshit and the fact that the Australian Government is considering it disgusts me! There is never a good reason for censorship especially in a first world democracy such as Australia. It needs to die.

EDIT: To the poster above me and the censoring of profanity in songs on radio, it annoys me to no end when in "It's not fair" - Lily Allen, the word "head" is bleeped out because it is referring to a sexual act, like come the fuck on people! This is Australia, where we had big "Want Longer Lasting Sex?" billboards up until only a few months ago! Get over it!

In cases like this then yes censorship is stupid.

That reminds me of a story I heard on the news. In Britain they beleeped part of the christmas song "A fairy tale in New York" because it contained a little bit of cursing.
But from what I know there was no complaints about the song and when people heard about it they thought it was a joke.

Yes but shouldn't you let them be children for a while, before they are exposed to sex, violence and drugs? They'll see enough of that in adulthood. I think what innocence they have should be preserved, for a while at least.

I have no problem with sensible censorship in media, as long as whatever is being censored is available in an uncensored format, to those who want it. Eg. Censored film on TV, uncensored DVD, Radio Edits of songs, uncensored album.

As with anything in life though, some censorship is over the top. Censoring expletives or whatever is fine, but censorship that limits the artist/ author etc. and their capacity to create what they want to create can be bad.

Censorship of gore and swearing doesn't really faze me. If you're desperate then it isn't like it's hard to find the original movie or song.

Censorship of ideas, on the other hand, is obviously wrong.

I have to admit, it was funny but it does makes the movie less serious (excluding "Snakes on the plane") which removes most of the movie experience.

I think you don't know what censorship means. It has nothing to do with blood in TV shows. It's all about prohibiting certain ideas, texts, religions etc.

Oh, and the Silent Hill movie wasn't gory at all. Can't image what could have been cut out except for 2-3 very small scenes.
But... how does gore scare people? I don't get it. :/

censorship is a hard subject to tackle, the main issue is decency, but what is decent varies from person to person, culture to culture. For example, I've watched t.v. here in japan and seen my fair share of breasts on network shows, but their porn is digitized or filled with lots and lots of hair or even flat out fakery. But realistic depictions of violence are rare. I don't quite get it, what makes one thing acceptable, something else not? The US seems to be ok with violence so long as it doesn't involve something sexual, and any kind of nudity is strictly out of the question on mainstream television. Swearing is also quite acceptable in japan, but on television in the US is fairly tame in contrast. I guess, what i'm trying to say, is that i don't get why certain things are ok and others are not, why is ok to show someone getting brutally strangled then tossed over the side of a ship into the propellors on CSI but not ok to show a married man on a soap opera have feelings for the only half naked stripper that was bought for his bachelor party? What i'm saying is, i think it's important for all societies to try and find middle grounds for their programing. So long as it's not blatantly offensive, let it go people. If it's for the children (it never really is), then let them get exposed to it, so it seems less of a taboo and they're less likely to take interest in it and thusly less tempted to partake of a "forbidden" fruit. Besides, it's not like these kids aren't going to grow up and see this kind of stuff and worse later.

Also, there is no such thing as innocence. Only degrees of guilt.

Censorship can a few times be ok, but when they censor music videos, thats just fucking retarded.. It is not possible to watch a single Rap video on MTV, half the lyrics are gone, replaced by either silence or a beep..

Escpecially thinking of Eminems videos..

Also, the laws of censorship when it comes to violent movies vs porn/sexual content..
They easily show someones eyes ripped out and guts shredded, but showing a nipple is a BIIIIG NO NO.. What the fuck is up with that?

What is more natural? Someone beeing torn to pieces, or beeing naked?
Someone answer me please!!!!

I'm wondering that myself, my brother saw it before me uncensored and when I asked him what were the differences, he didn't want to talk about it. Which just made me more annoyed watching it the second time because I was expecting it to be scarier. :D

The rising amount of censorship in today's society is horrendous. It's fascist, and delusional. If you think that stopping children from hearing swear words is going to stop them swearing, think again. As for censorship of people expressing their religious views, that is oppresive and wrong.

Did he say "monkey fighting snakes on this monday to friday plane"?

I hate censorship on TV, especially when they cut out some of the best or most important lines. Either leave it intact or don't show it at all.

I am of the position that nothing should be censored, at all. Not Gory movies, not japanese rape games or rape scenes in other mediums, absolutely nothing. The only thing i find acceptable is sticking a warning on it saying "this might give you or your kids nightmares" and leave it at that. People should have an absolute freedom in making whatever they want, even though it might disturb some weak-minded person. Better to have no censorship at all than having nothing to watch but "Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure" on tv and then playing "Captain Bland's Monotonous Adventure - The Game" - Shamelessly borrowed from Yahtzee:) Which is what we're heading toward, slowly but surely.

To take a seemingly extreme case:

I think that to make a video game about Fallujah is pretty tasteless. However, the government has absolutely no right to tell them they can't make it. Of course, I would also argue that, say, a WW2 veteran who sees his grandson playing Call of Duty or Medal of Honor or Company of Heroes might think that was pretty tasteless, too. But, we still have people in Iraq, for crying out loud. Isn't it a little soon? Oh well, let the people determine that by choosing to buy or not buy the game.

My views may seem confusing. I voted "I hate it."
