So I happily booted up Shadowrun:Hong Kong only to discover that my character makes loud footstep noises all the time when I move. Unnecessary and annoying. I got used to them as the game went on but it started out very annoying.

I remember there being other games Ive played much worse than that though so I'll as the escapediddlyapists, whats the worst game for this?

Well, whenever I go back to Morrowind the footsteps annoy me for a bit. Basically, you've got three: light armour, medium armour and heavy armour. The light sounds all *pif-paf-pif-paf*, the medium sounds a bit more *doonk-doonk-doonk-doonk*, but the heavy sounds *pock-pock-pock-pock*. So I usually spend the first fifteen minutes or so jumping in mid-run to break up the monotony of it, resulting in a quiet gap before a *DOOMP* when the character's feet hit the ground again. After a while I encounter other NPCs and get into combat, which takes my mind off it. It's only in unpopulated areas with quiet ambient sounds and little encounters that I pick up on it, usually.

Still worse is Crack-Life, a Half-Life mod in which someone's taken the clip of Penn Teller saying "SHUT. THE FUCK. UP." and made the "FUCK" part the footstep sound. All you can hear when Gordon's running over catwalks is a tiny voice shouting *Fuck-fuck-fuck-fuck-fuck*...

Anyway, yes, kinda, but only when there's a very small amount of movement noises the sound engineer recorded.

Take Dark Souls for example, it has like 4 different footstep sounds while you're wearing the majority of all armours in the game, so you're hearing the exact same sound effects A LOT.

Cole McGrath in inFAMOUS. I don't remember if it was his shoes or the backpack he was carrying around, but he made an incessant jingling sound whenever he moved that was really hard to get used to and maked for one good reason never to play the game again.

The Team Silent Silent Hill games are all evil for this. The foot sound never changes regardless of where you are. My playstyle is usually rushing through the levels trying to find solutions so I don't have to fight the monsters, clop clop clop clop clop clop clop clop clop.

Thank God it got taken out in the Western ones, or at least quietened to not sound like it echoes itself.

Really? Because I distinctly remember Silent Hill 2 having an array of different footstep sounds, from graval to carpet to pavement and wood. And I'm sure Silent Hill 3 had the same deal. Unless you're refering to the volume.

The best kind of clop clop clop.
I haven't watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail in a long time. Thanks for reminding me.

OT: Nope, footstep sounds don't bother me. And I find it useful if enemies also make footstep sounds when I can't see them.
Very useful. I tend to find it a bit off-putting when my character glides around silently like a ghost.

Bioshock 1, after you put on the big daddy boots, near the end of the game.

*DONG* *DONG* *DONG* *DONG* *DONG*

And it's really weird that in Bioshock 2 you actually ARE a big daddy, but you don't make anywhere close to that amount of noise when you stomp around.
Different sort of big daddy I guess, (not to mention having that loud stomping sound for an ENTIRE game would be torture on the ears).

Me typically in csgo:

"hey, uh, try walking right... now"
"what why?"
"STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP. they can hear you by now. Congrats they know where you are"

Dark Souls. Seriously the constant "*****, *****, *****" when wearing ANY kind of heavier armor is just...GAH!
