How would you try to make yourself understood and why?

I would choose pictures, because while you may not be able to tell complex ideas with them, you could at least get basic concepts across and try to work form there.

Pictures is the only way i think. Gestures would be impossible, even in the human race, diffrent gestures mean diffrent things depending on the persons background.

I think if there's one thing that Hollywood taught us, it's that most aliens speak English.
Therefor, I don't think there should be any problems.

On topic: What do you mean with "digital"?
If you mean something like binary code, then I wouldn't pick that because it's essentially just another answer.
Perhaps we can communicate through "feelings" or some other non-explainable things that are found throughout the universe?

I'm not trying to get philosophical here, but I don't think that the ability to "listen" is the same as the ability to "understand".

Well, depending on the situation. If the alien seems to have eyes, pictures is a good place to start. If it doesn't have eyes, but seems to react to sound, I'd try sound. If it seems to have a massive nose like thing, then smell somehow. If it seems to have a mouth inside it's mouth and appears to bleed acid, I'd run the fuck away.

Completely depending on the alien.

I guess I would have to learn spansish... Wait you mean THOSE aliens? Well we would use telepathy and read each others thoughts and or maybe they would use their powers to take English from my brain and copy it into theirs. I wish we could travel faster then speed of light, I am so damn curious on aliens now!
