I don't like conformity, mainly because it takes away self expression and replaces it with 92% of people looking EXACTLY THE SAME. Now looking at anyone under the age of 20 I've realized that there only two real looks for people. One is a hip-hop look that normally consists of unusally baggy pants and hoodies and the metal-head look which is usually a band T-shirt, jeans, usually something with leather and odd accessories like studded belts and wrist bands. Now there are certain things that that vary from these styles but they're just branches of it. Like Goth and Emo are similar to metalhead and jocks usually look like the hip-hop group. There are only two types of people that don't fit in some way to these two. Nerd (no offense to any out there) and people who just make their own styles. Nerds aren't conformists because most are socially inept except to those they relate to in their interests. (To make it clear when I say "Nerd" I mean the definiton given in The Big Picture as somebody who has fanatical devotion to something that ultimately doesn't matter.)To look at the other side of this, I have a friend who wears a top hat, a monacle, a pocket watch and a trench coat. He made his own style. Which is admirable. He chose not to bend to conformity of others. I also realise that a lot of these people that do conform are usually in the mind set of other people they conform with, as to say they think very much alike. Now I'm slightly guilty of this myself. I'm the standard metalhead who wears studded belts and band T-shirts and I think what most of them believe as well, but that's because I already did and not because I want to fit in.

All that to say, do you consider yourself a conformist and do you think conformity is bad?

when something works really well and is adopted by the majority of the population...
an artist calls it cliche
and a biologist calls it evolution

I call it unimportant.

What is adopted by the majority of population is meaningless to the individual.

I'm so nonconformist I don't conform with whatever you conform with, wait so that means that I conform, but if I'm trying to be nonconformist I can't conform, but there are many other nonconformists out there, so I'm conforming with them, but if I tried to be nonconformist with them I would need to conform with the conformists which means that to conform to them I would need to *HEAD EXPLODES*

No one is truly nonconformist, if you live in a society at all, your conforming with someone, probably many people.

Honestly I think everyone is a conformist to an extent, because a lot of people choose not to conform which means that those people all conform to an idea, hence making them what they set out to avoid in the first place. But they way I see it, it doesn't matter. If you like something, like it, if you don't, don't.

Conformity is one of the things keeping society from tearing itself apart.

The next time you're out shopping or doing whatever it is you do in the public and somebody acts like a complete fucking prick...just remember, they're being non-conformist.

There's a difference between an ability to express yourself and having unique creative ideas and views and being an outsider who conforms in a backwards sort of way by going out of their way to do the opposite of the norm.

I conform with the non conformists. But mostly I conform with whatever helps me achieve my goal. Then I go home and become me again. Makes life easy and helps one further their personal goals, win/win.

I'm a non-conformist, just like everybody else.

Another thing. You say your definition of "nerd" is somebody with a fanatical devotion to something. Does that mean that you would consider somebody with a fanatical devotion to sports or exercise a nerd? Just wondering.

I think conformity is way different than people think it is. Many people do things and become a part of a culture that they enjoy. Doing it for the sake of being like other people is conformity. Doing the same thing as everybody else because you legitimately enjoy it is just as individual as wearing a top hat and monocle, even if what you're doing includes spray-tans and heavy drinking at parties.

That being said, I think it's just as bad to make up your own thing for the sake of being different, and then complain about other peoples' conformity, because that's not only being a close-minded jerk, but is kind of along the same vein as being the same because you want to be the same. I'm not implying that anyone here is doing that. Also, OP, I applaud your honesty, and you shouldn't feel guilty about being a typical metalhead. It that's what you're comfortable with, you should feel no reason to change.

I personally have come up with no distinct style as far as I know, and if I did, it was an accident, I swear. I just wear t-shirts and jeans. I look like Jesus, which is why people call me that. I listen to mostly classic rock, jazz, and classical music. I could go on, but I don't care. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there like that. I have no reason to step outside of my comfort zone simply because there are other people like me.

In a practical sense, yes, that is correct, every case should be examined on its own merits. But, by definition what works for the majority is what is most likely to work for a randomly selected individual.

I just sort of exist. I don't try to conform to anything popular, but I don't try to actively avoid liking popular things either. I tend to end up liking less popular things than a lot of people, but I figure I probably like a lot more popular stuff than some hipster kid would.

So, I suppose I would definitively say that I am not a conformist, but also don't much care to be labeled a non-conformist. "Non-conformist" implies effort to be contrary to the mainstream, which I don't have the energy or the desire for.

I like to think I'm non-conformist, but I probably am.
I think Frank Burns of M*A*S*H summed conformity up pretty well:
"Why Individuality is fine, as long as we do it together"
Never thought M*A*S*H would have relevance on The Escapist...

If you can relate to anyone on just about anything, you can be considered conformist.

Though I don't like general statements like that, since there is always an exception. But generally, it can be true, depending on the light shed about it.

There is no "your" definition of anything, if words mean different things to different people then that's actually o.k. as long as the definitions are similar. However, arguing over the definition of a word is pointless becuase all someone has to do is look up the official meaning of the word in a dictionary. This comment is by no means a severe offender in this regard but i always like to nip these arguments in the bud.

Just for fun i have decided to put in the merriam-webster definition for nerd and to conform

Nerd
: an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits

Conform
2a : to be obedient or compliant ?usually used with to <conform to another's wishes>

<a href=http://www.cracked.com/article_18916_5-reasons-why-anticonformity-worse-than-conformity.html>How has no one linked this?

If it's popular, great! As long as it doesn't get annoying. If it's not, wonderful! It'll be indie and chic for as long as you want it to be.

Buh, too many people spend too much time thinking about what others think of them these days and not enough time trying to do something useful with their lives.

There's been countless trillions of people who've been born throughout history. You're going to be conforming to some group that's existed. It's not a big deal unless you let it be so.
