Hiya

I'm just wondering how many people it would actually annoy to have a delay in their input if they were streaming their game rather than having it rendered on their console or PC. I thought at first this would annoy me greatly, but then realised that it might not annoy me in RPG type games.

I've also noticed a lot of people are annoyed at the fact that they will no longer be "owning" games if the cloud based stuff takes off, claiming the game developer could just decide they don't own them anymore. The game company would be breaking their agreement to you by deciding you no longer own something you've purchased the rights to play on steam or some other cloud thing as if they walked in your house and took your disk from you. You should trust in the fact that if that stuff started happening, once it got found out it would be very expensive for the gaming company, and their goal is just to make as much money as they can, not to rip off as many people as they can as slyly as possible.

Also, did I really understand the latest EC right, that with faster internet it could become normal and popular to have things rendered on some server somewhere and streamed to you? That does mean there would be a lot of input delay, wouldn't there?

Thanks for your thoughts everyone! :)

One thing to take into account here is that the idea of Cloud gaming is in it's EARLIEST stages of infancy. We're talking here about a development that is going to take at least a few years, and will be matched by roughly 10 more years of consoles.

Now, if you look 10 years into the future, we're likely to see not only a very large expansion of infrastructure to keep up with the demands of modern technology, but also a growth and streamlining of current tech to make it more efficient, as well as the emergence of new tech

Just look at the tech jump between 1990 and 2000

then look at the tech jump between 2000 and 2010

now just imagine the tech jump between 2010 and 2020

It's probably not even WORTH doing, because of how exponential the growth of the technology market is.

The big question is will steaming be able to keep up with the increased gaming graphics requirements of the next 10 years?

In the same way has digital movie distribution been able to keep up with what the fidelity of what you can get on a physical medium?

I expect to see graphics plateau in the next couple of years, if they haven't already begun to. We've pretty much almost hit a point where you get very little for each extra dollar you sink into graphics. The human eye can only draw so much of a distinction, and furthermore, the more realistic your graphics become, the more you get into uncanny valley territory.

Or some other advance comes a long like, quantum computing, that makes rendering of more detailed graphics not cost so much. Just as plausible as all the other theories about gamings future we keep hearing.

Love how every time people say graphic cannot and do not need to get much better, they do....

Well, I think the advantage of streaming is that the graphics can be rendered somewhere else on some amazing supercooled server thing, so I think the graphics capability of streaming should be better than our own consoles or PCs. It just occurred to me you probably mean resolution and framerate ... that's a good point, I dunno I guess it depends on how good the internet gets.

Thankyou all for the cool responses :) <3

Sure it's possible, I agree. But I don't know if I really see much point in it. Personally, I haven't really seen anything done graphically since Crysis that has really impressed me. Mind you, I am more than happy to be wrong, I don't really benefit from being right/wrong, so I have no stake in it. It's just how I feel in my gut atm.

But the fact the graphic envelope has not been pushed forward more than Crysis is not due to a technical brick wall, but down to the biggest market segment having been stuck on the same hardware since before Crysis came out.

The technology to do better graphics is there as graphics processing power has doubled a couple of times since the current crop of consoles came out. The stumbling block is not the technology or the amount of money need to make something better, but fears about return on investment any such game may not work on consoles. So it is a market stumbling block rather a lack of technology or the amount of development money needed.

I'm old fashion. I like having my books on my shelves, not so computer, and my games in their cases, not stored on a server. So I fall under the area of "Yes, I'd be very annoyed, so much so that I would probably stop playing games."

i would yell and gnash my teeth because the infrastructure is so bad here and because of telecoms monopoly will be bad for the foreseeable future and 20 gb of data costs an arm and a leg in the central city suburbs
