****Disclaimer****
(I am not trying to start a revolt or encourage piracy in any way. I am just a gamer that would eather like cheaper consoles or far cheaper games.
I don't mean to sound complainy or whiny I just wish someone would do something!!!)
In no way am I saying we should do this, but it makes for good conversation!!!

Consoles sholud be free. As extream as that sounds... it's true. Think about it for a minute. At $300 a PS3 Slim is not cheap (though cheper that a PS3 once was) a Wii... $220 at least Xbox arcade packs are only $200, but still! After that inicial price, come game after game after game all startin upwards of $50.00s (except for chepo Wii titles which should be illigal [I'm kidding]). This is where the free consle idea lies.... the games. If companies offer consoles for free via EB game or Best Buy pick up or mail... whatever and charged an aditional $20.00 on a game, that would pay for the console.
Say the average gamer owns 10 games (low as that is) that becomes $200.00s in console revenue.
Some people own 30 games... $600.00s additional revenue for free consoles. The only company that may get bitten by this would be Nintendo as there are A LOT of Wiis in seniors homes where all they play is Wii Sports.
To prevent multple consoles being given to the same person, they could implement a complexe registration prosess that would ensure one console per person.
There you go.... Consoles should be free (this does exclude PCs and MACs as that would be imposible to do).
Make sense? What do you think?

But the companies making the consoles aren't the ones who are making the games...

the math makes since on paper, but you must factor in pirates and the fact that the company isn't going to give out anything for free. ever.

This, and it works the other way round, meaning games can't be free.

Calumon: Playing is normally free. Why do people spend £30 to cook a pretend meal when they could just cook one themselves for less?

I do like cheese but...

Consoles are very expensive to research and develop, there is no way you could expect them to be free.

There is no way the console can become free, tho I would not mind renting it at 10-15$ a month and a upgrade shipping charge of 50$ and free replacements if it goes bad, buying it outright would cost a grand or so that could work. But even if consoles went in the direction of DVD with a universal hardware format the different companies agree upon the vendors that build them will have to sell them.

So there is no way consoles will be free.

This, a thousand times.
Microsoft and Sony aren't making money on any console sold.
When you add up reasearch costs, development costs, and final production, both Sony and Microsoft are in the red with every console they sell. The only way they make it back is through licensing cuts from games sold.

They're going to charge as much as they can get away with for both consoles or games. That's how the economy works. The only way they'll ever get cheaper is if people simply stop buying them. But since the popularity of gaming (especially console gaming) is only increasing, you can expect prices to go up.

but in all honesty what if you buy enough games that it costs more than 300$ in the extra amount? HMM HMMMMMMM, you'd be losing money than just getting the console at normal price. if you can't afford it... well tough titties

and you really gotta learn how to spell and use proper grammar

so.... mainly your complaining that your buying some retards ingenious idea to get your mmoney in his pocket and now you want it free. yeah, remind me that in the future when i make a console that cost me 269 dollars to make that i should make it free and charge the games up more because i dont want to make any PROFIT. thats why they do it. for PRofit. because everyone needs money. and besides, even if the consoles were free and the game prices go up, no ones ghoing to buy games and make the same argument for games that your making for consoles here.

my advice: go buy a computer, customize it to support your favorite games, and them never buy a console. the only reason why i have a ps3 is because my cousin bought it for me.

I laughed Milo out my left nostril when I read this... I suppose it's the only thing you can do with a wii.

Imagine how many people would have this idea : get free console, sell to person who bought different free console who only buys it to add to his collection where he only has about 2 games per console, everyone loses! I'm sorry OP, but it's time for your lobotomy...

Surely most people do that anyway? Roughly £40 for a game where i'm from, so once you've bought ten games, thats the cost of the console covered.

Then why has every major console only cut prices since release?
If they were selling at $500 a pop, why not keep it that high?

My 360 cost $499 when I first bought it (1st Generation).
Now, it's $299 and comes with two big-name games (Forza 3 and Halo ODST).

Gaming popularity has only gone up since then, so why wouldn't prices, if what you're saying is true?
And why would Microsoft and Sony both sell their consoles at a loss to them?
