Valve has just announced that a new entry in the Counter-Strike Series will be coming out soon. Titled Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the expected release date is in ?early 2012″ for Steam (PC and Mac), Playstation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade. Global Offensive will feature ?all new maps, characters, and weapons? as well as updated content such as ?de_dust? and other fan favorites. Global Offensive will also add new gameplay modes, matchmaking systems, leaderboards, and more unannounced features.

CS: GO is being developed by both Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment, who also worked with Valve on more recent updates for Counter-Strike: Source. CS: GO will be playable at PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo.

Rumors of the games development initially started circulating earlier this morning, and its possible that Valve announced the game prematurely to stem the flow of rumors. You can visit the games Steam Store page here, though it is very light on details at the moment

The Counter-Strike series has not seen a new entry since the 2004 release of Counter-Strike: Source, which despite being 7 years old, is still one of the most played PC games online. CS:GO is another title being added to the ever growing list of Valve?s actively developed series. The studio, who is known for their slow development cycles, is now actively working on the Portal, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike series?, as well as their upcoming DOTA game.

VALVE ANNOUNCES COUNTER-STRIKE: GLOBAL OFFENSIVE (CS: GO)

Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

August 13, 2011 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

?Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999,? said Doug Lombardi, VP of Marketing at Valve. ?For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS? award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.?

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year?s PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo.

Well, 7 years since CS:S. 13 since 1.6 . It's been a hell of a ride. What are your expectations for the next installment? Are you excited?

I don't really like competitive first person shooters as a whole, so this is a resounding MEH from me.

I'm looking forward to it in a weird sort of way since it's going to be HILARIOUS to watch all the inevitable Episode 3 angst this game is going to generate. Ah, this is going to be entertaining.

Well as the game is only funded by valve, not MADE by them, then the angst will be mis-guided.

I really am not sure how I feel about this...I am happy that they are going to bring a new one out, but scared they will mess with the game enough to not make it counter-strike anymore...

Actually Valve IS and HAS been developing it, along with HPE.

I was under the impression that valve just paid another company to do it and just put it under the "umbrella" of valve. Im not sure now hahaha. I guess a few places have said that they will develop it along side Hidden Path, I stand corrected haah

I'm sorry, but we've needed Episode Three for a lot longer than we've needed another Counter-Strike. Yes, CS:S is much older than Episode Two, but you cannot compare the two. Ep2 ended on a cliffhanger. CS:S can carry on the way it is forever and be fun.

Hey VALVe: Fuck you, too!

I really hope they will do some serious rebalancing, and add ADS.

ADS would be the worst possible thing you could do. Then it wouldn't be counter-strike.

And yeah, they are doing some VERY serious re-balancing with the weapons.

This actually means Valve is closer to announcing HL3. The new engine means thats already done, and if you are a valve fan you should know that they dont announce things until its already near completion.

Give them a fucking break.

They're not making a new engine.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-13-valve-not-planning-source-engine-2

It's the same old Source engine fixed up a bit. Portal 2 uses the same engine that Half-Life 2 used, only with some additives to make you forget that you're actually playing a game on an outdated engine.

And no, I'm not going to give anybody a fucking break when they (Gabe Newell) refuse to answer Episode Three questions and then turn around, in the same interview, and say how much emphasis they put in listening to fans. Yeah, uh-huh. Bullshit.

They obviously don't care about the Half-Life fans and this right here means that I will not be buying Episode Three.

When I said New Engine I didn't mean NOT Source. Source is only graphically outdated which Im sorry if aesthetics is all that matter to you. Its still a great and flexible engine that has aged well. Not saying they couldn't use a new one.

>>Counter-Strike: 1999
Half-Life: 1998
Half-Life: Opposing Force: 1999
Half-Life: Blue Shift: 2001
Half-Life: Decay 2002
Half-Life 2: 2005
>>Counter-Strike: Source 2005
Half-Life 2: Episode 1: 2006
Half-Life 2: Episode 2: 2007

Lets recap. A total of TWO CS games the past 12 years.

Number of HL games the past 12 years? Seven. SEVEN.

Maybe stop being so selfish, and realise a lot of other people want a new Counter-Strike, and not a bunch of hats. Patience is a virtue.

I remember playing the original Counter Strike a while back. Found it hollow and without meaning. Got bored quickly.

I mean the maps were interesting, and playing some of them a few times was fun. But after that, it just got boring because there was nothing else left to see. I didn't really enjoy the game. What really killed Counter Strike for me though was the one server I ended up on which was apparently modded so the players could piss on their opponents. Stay classy guys.

The only version of Counter Strike worth playing, in my opinion, is Condition Zero Deleted Scenes, which features the funniest scenes I have ever seen in such a game.

Terrorist Leader: (standing out of reach while his minions attack me) This glass is bulletproof! You can't get to me! OH YOU PUSSY!!

It's even funnier in a thick Irish accent.

So, no. I am not excited for the new Counter Strike. In fact I could not care less.

You just don't get it, do you? And to prove it, you show "statistics" and insult me. I remember something that Mark Twain said: "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies and statistics". You actually have Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, XBOX Counter-Strike (which contained new maps and whatnot), Counter-Strike: Source and NOW Global Offensive. Three games if you don't count XBOX CS, not two. Also, Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Decay were not made by VALVe. They were made by Gearbox Software and are, therefore, non-canonical. They do not count as proper Half-Life games.

Next, they are two very different games. Counter-Strike has infinite replayability, as demonstrated that people STILL play de_dust on CS 1.6 after this many years. Plus, you get modders who make new maps and stuff like that. Infinity replayable.

Half-Life has a story. A linear story that ended on a cliffhanger back in October of 2007. Since then, you CS players have had new maps made from modders and whatnot, gotten updates, the whole shebang, while we have gotten nothing. You can play de_dust and it will be a different experience than a match you played a year ago. Play Episode Two and it's the same experience that we had back in 2007. And no modder can fill the gap.

Now please stop being so ignorant. At least you guys are getting something.

And now a new Counterstrike, it's like Valve wants to work on everything EXCEPT Half Life.

Don't forget Defense of the Ancients 2 and the rumor that they are working on their long lost game Propero. D:

Playstation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade.
CS isn't really a console game, I don't think this is going to turn out well. By the way, if you're planning on getting it on PSN or XBLA, don't waste your money, it's going to lose players very quickly, just like every other multiplayer XBLA game (Blacklight: Tango Down, Quake Arena: Arcade from my experience, probably many others too).

matchmaking systems, leaderboards
Oh god, the matchmaking system better not be on PC, and if it is, it better not replace dedicated servers (with server list). Leaderboards is going to be bad too, it's going to be getting a lot of K/D whores being no credit to the team.

Hidden Path Entertainment
Same guys who screwed up the last few CS:Source updates? Well hopefully they don't make it so the game acts as if you are spraying at all times, like they changed it to in CS:S (Before the screen would shake after a lot of consecutive shots, and now it shakes every shot).

Matchmaking will be a feature in the Competitive section of the menu.

Dedicated servers will remain in the Casual section.
