Poll: Cult and obscure, or well-known and popular?

Well, let's hope the poll option does not have a failure of epic proportions.

So, just now, completely at random, it struck me. A long while back, in the troll-infested intellectual wasteland that is the YouTube comments section, one person told me the only reason I don't like Final Fantasy 7 is because it's popular.

No, shut up, this topic is not about Final Fantasy 7 and how it does/n't suck. This topic is about something we can discuss intelligently.

Now, I like Mario. I enjoyed the Harry Potter movies. I thought Scott Pilgrim was cool, though I still do want to read the comics at some point. I liked Gurren Lagann and Baccano. I enjoyed playing the Metroid games... Up until I keep getting stuck at about two hours in. (Half an hour, in the case of Other M.)

But, just recently, a thought came to mind. When the flying fuck was the last time I had anything to do with something popular?

I watch Gundam, Getter Robo, and Black Lagoon. I play Shin Megami Tensei, Tales, and Nippon Ichi Software games.

I enjoy EarthBound, Jak, and Monster Hunter. I read Berserk, Rave Master, and Kenshin!

You barely ever hear people talk about these things, if at all. And I'm betting that not one of you has ever even heard of the named "Getter Robo" before.

But, to make my point, this was completely unconscious. I found some of this stuff as a kid, and some of them I stumbled about recently. Heck, I didn't even know how obscure Getter is until I turned 13, and I've been watching it since I was about 11.

Go look at your shelves. See how many of your games and movies are things that everyone talked about for two weeks, and then forgot, or how much of your stuff is that which only a small group of people speak of as though it's a timeless legend.

It's been seven years and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is still arguably one of the best JRPGs around. Almost everyone who has played Zettai Hero Project will tell you the game is one of the single most amazing things on the PSP.

Now, fellow Escapists, I ask, where do you lean with your favorites? Are they obscure? Are they well-known? Which part of the scale is your collection on?

I like Kenshin.

I suppose it depends on who you ask. If you ask someone who likes Kenshin, for example, you'll hear, "Are you kidding?! Of *course* Kenshin is popular!"

However, if you ask someone who's never seen Rurouni Kenshin, you'll probably get something like, "I'm sorry, I don't speak Japanese. Is he a friend of yours?"

To summarize, popularity is subjective.

Wow, what do you lean towards? I only like things based on how many other people like it. I like avatar I must lean towards cult according your own topic where @Pararaptor quotes you. I watched Death Bed the bed that ate people without listening to Patton Oswalt first and found it a good movie, I must be mainstream.

A lot of the stuff you mentioned (especially Mario and Harry Potter, those are some of the most well known things of their respective categories) is fairly mainstream. I've heard of all of it, even Getter Robo though I've never watched it. I would think anyone who has been into anime for more than 10 years has heard of and probably watched Rurouni Kenshin (or possibly by Samurai X or whatever).

As for me, there are some incredibly mainstream things I like, but in general its on the lesser known side I guess. Rarely ever goes into the very obscure though, I find that the type of stuff that is only talked about by virtue of its small but devoted cult following isn't enjoyable for me.

I usually can care less about whether or not something is popular, if I find some redeeming qualities then i usually like it, unless it's anime or a jrpg, those i just hate out of hand

I don't tend to lean towards anything in particular. I like things that are popular and I like things that are unknown. When something is popular, I can discuss it with the people around me. When it is unknown I can bring it to their attention. I can find joy in either situation.

I don't lean towards anything particular. I enjoy all sorts of things. Though I have to say, I am rather puzzled when I bring up Alan Moore's run on Supreme and no one seems t understand what I'm saying. Shame really. T'was an epic run.

I'm one to enjoy things mostly regardless of outside opinion, if I get to it before that opinion gets to me. I'm pretty sure everyone is like that to an extent. I'm not extremely fond of Dane Cook, and I'd be fibbing if I didn't say that wasn't due in part to being told how much it sucked before hearing any of his material. In my mind, both of the Transformers movies are most likely terrible because of the overwhelming bad feedback I've heard about it.
I try to make a point to try out something before I decide so that preconceptions don't weigh too heavily. A good example of that would be Monster Hunter. I love love love love the first one to death, and haven't played any others because of a cruel alignment of the stars that has prevented another release in America for a system I have. I'd say that I wouldn't buy a system just for that, but I get a refurbished PS2 just to play my old copy (and get 15 other classics for ~5$ each ^_^). This was the first game that made me distrust game reviews, as Game Informer gave the first one a 3/10(bastards >_>). I'm quite glad that I got to the game by chance before the review got to me.

As for my collection, it's a good mix, but considering I just finished downing a wyvern with my Iron Impact+ hammer, I'm a bit biased towards the obscure side atm.

I lean towards the "I like it so I like it" side of things. Liking something because it's "obscure" just to get a smug feeling of satisfaction is stupid, as is disliking something for being popular. The complete inverse of that also applies. Sometimes things are mainstream and popular because they're actually good, steering away from the popular stuff just because it's popular would mean not listening to some of my all time favourite bands. Why put myself at such a disadvantage to be "edgy"?

I guess since the majority of my music is metal I lean a little more to the obscure, because the majority of non-metalheads won't know half the bands I listen to. In metal terms, I'm a mix of mainstream and obscure, to everyone else I'm just weird.

Both.

For instance, I absolutely love the little indie game Amnesia: The Dark Descent. But I also absolutely love the Mass Effect games.

I guess I'm copping out, because I'd rather do "good" than "cult" or "mainstream." Pretty much what Zekksta said.

And if you're a Samurai Warriors fan, you probably think "Uesugi."

No, I know of Rurouni Kenshin.

I usually don't even have a clue whether something I like is actually popular or not. :p
