Recently, a group of friends and I got into a discussion concerning the various "Dark Lords" throughout science-fiction/fantasy, and how some were better than others. The reasons varied from raw power to sadistic personality to dramatic storyline to appearances. The conversation was entertaining to say the least, and I was quite curious as to who my fellow escapists would pick as their favorite Lord of Evil. And before anyone says anything: No, Saten/Hitler/Stalin/Nero/G.W. Bush/Bill Gates/any other historical, religious, political, mythological, or otherwise non-fictional person does not count. (I apologise in advance if this has been done before, but I searched and came up with nothing [if this has been done before, please post a link to the thread])

My personal pick is Sauron from the Lord of the Rings, simply because he seems to be the model for almost all fantasy dark lords within modern fantasy literature.

Big Brother a Dark Lord? REALLY?

...

Also Sauron is the true Dark Lord. He is so evil and awesome, that he doesn't even bother to show up the stories where he is suppose to be main villain

Also this is why Big Brother is not a dark Lord:

"The forces of evil often are personified in a Dark Lord. He is often depicted as a diabolical force, and may, indeed, be more a force than a personality. The effects of his rule often assert malign effects on the land as well as his subjects. Besides his usual magical abilities, he often controls great armies. A Dark Lord is usually depicted as the ultimate personification of evil, and often commits atrocities that make common people afraid to speak their very names"

Big Brother doesn't fit the mold. He has no magical abilities.

Either MORGOTH. Sauron's BOSS. Because he's hardcore. Or maybe Mammon from Spawn. He ALWAYS has a plan.

The Day Star a.k.a. The Devil a.k.a. Lucifer (Morning Star) a.k.a. Iblis a.k.a. Shaitan a.k.a. Satan

So evil, one name is just not enough. Non-fictional? That would depend on who you ask I guess. But he is the inspiration of most every story since the first "Good" book.

Darth Vader.

Revan is a Vader wannabe, Palpatine is an old corpse, Sauron gets his power from a ring, and Ganondorf just cant take a hint.

Well myself, obviously.
Or if that goes into the not-allowed category, I must say the Overlord. 'Couse let's face it, none of the others have gleefully sadistic little minions that you want to buy.

Sauron.

He was a GOD's second in command for gods sake.

If you didn't know that, read the Silmarillion

I wouldn't really look at Big Brother as a "Dark Lord"... usually "Dark Lord" implies some sort of dark powers. Big Brother is just watching you. Creepy as fuck and the most successful out of all of them (I think, though I haven't read 1984), but not exactly magical in any sense.

Anyways, I picked Palpatine, because out of everyone on the list (other than Big Brother, of course) he was the most successful. At the prime of his reign, he had exactly what he wanted. An entire empire under his rule. There was resistence, but until Galen Marek came around, nothing substantial. The others, though powerful, never had this.

Ganondorf was always stopped by Link and never ruled more than just Hyrule for a short time. Sauron, though close, never took full control of the world (unlike with Palpatine, there was no false peace showing control... always war). The White Witch, well... let's face it, she was a pussy. Arthas the Lich King, though nearly immortal, didn't strike when he should have and instead gave the world years to recover.

Palpatine was a fucking genious. Excellent with people. He would get you on his side before you even realized it. It was partially because of a Force influence on the mind, but overall it was just him using psychology. He was a master of the conscious mind even without the Force. The amount of people he manipulated to get to his position of power included even Yoda himself. He's the most successful Sith Lord of the entire Star Wars mythos. He's the only one to come so close to nearing both goals of the Sith: ruling the galaxy (which he succeeded in) and wiping the Jedi out (which he got damn close to doing). And I'd say he is also the most successful out of this list (other than Big Brother) and any other dark lord I can think of.

EDIT: And I forgot to mention his mastery of the Force. He was a complete master of Force Lighting, and the only person to ever master the Force Storm. He was pretty good with a lightsaver, too. The only ones that could stand up to him were Mace Windu and Yoda. Which is why his fight in TFU pissed me off =/

I didn't put Darth Vader becasue, technically, he's not what I consider a "Dark Lord," mainly for the facts that A. he's not the highest authority in his domain (that would be Palpatine) and B. he is eventually redeemed.

How can Revan be a Darth Vader wannabe when he came first by 4000 years? :p

Plus, as awesome as Vader is, you have to remember that he was the chosen one of the light side of the force. Even though he brought the galaxy to it's knees along with Palpatine (who is, by the way, far from an old corpse, read my other post in here) at the end he fulfilled the prophecy and destroyed the last of the real Sith Lords. Ain't so dark lordish of him..

But still, Vader was a badass in his dark prime, there is no denying that :D
