Last week i went to my first Tournament for Novice Policy Debate. I was wondering how many people on the Escapist do any form of debate and what was your favorite Topic or your hardest opponent over the time you have debated?

I don't even understand what most of your poll options are. John douglas?
If you were in debate you would know.

Policy- there is two teams of two people. each of the the teams give four speeches. the first four speeches set up the arguments that each team will run. the last four speeches refute what the other side said during the first four speeches. Talking fast is the most recognizable part of policy, it is a lot of reading off evidence that supports your side.

Public Forum- what people think of when someone says debate. it's like a political debate.

Lincoln Douglas- this is really philosophical debate. it is based more on logical reasoning than on evidence.

I was in congressional debate back in high school so I guess that one wins by default because I have never participated in any other forms.

Well, I certainly do debate, but I'm not sure which of your choices I do. I presume you're American (hence the Congressional debates) but I am British, where we do things a little differently it seems.

Look, I'll say how our debates work, then if you'd kindly match it up with one of your choices that'd be lovely ta'.

There are 4 teams of 2 people each. 2 teams are for the motion, 2 teams against. The order goes 1st for, 1st against, 2nd for, 2nd against ect. ect.

Everyone except the first for speaker is expected to rebut the other teams points, the first for speaker is expected to clearly define the motion. The last two speakers shouldn't make any new points, they should just sum up the debate and clarify any points of clash.

Also, did I read your policy debate description right? Is it really just talking very fast? Because without wanting to belittle your hobby, that doesn't really sound like debating.

Policy is like that but with a questioning period in between the first four speeches and only two teams. the first four speeches set up the arguments that each team will run. the last four speeches refute what the other side said during the first four speeches. the talking fast is the most recognizable part of policy, it is a lot of reading off evidence that supports your side. i realize now that my first description is lacking, so i will go back and change it.

I did something similar to policy back in high school. Only it was teams of three and the first speaker was the linchpin. Everyone did one speech before going back to the first guy who tries to counter everything said by the opposition.

Lincoln Douglas seems more of a college thing than high school, but I might be thinking of the wrong thing...

I used to be a pretty good public speaker and enjoyed the debating at school, probably the most interesting one being about the introduction of the Euro...

The most fun I had with one was when I had to argue both for and against in a 'maths is more important a subject to be taught in primary school' debate... that was a strange experience given that everyone knew my propensity for maths...
