Okay, straight to the point. What is the difference between Diablo 2 and the expansion? Did they add anything to the campaign itself or is it mostly just the battle net or multiplayer modifications? Would it hurt me to go to the expansion pack straight or would I be better off starting from Diablo 2 itself?

Diablo 2: LoD adds a new chapter to the campaign, two more classes, and I think has a gameplay modification for player movement.

You need one for the other, and since I've only seen it common as the Battlechest then you have both.

I don't really remember much of Diablo 2 without the expansion, but I would get it if I were you. It doesn't cost much and it adds a lot of content.

You need the original to play the expansion so you will need both. The expansion adds two new classes, the druid and the assassin, fixes many small bugs, and adds a 5th act to the game which gives 6 more quests and many new areas.

You have to play through the original four acts of D2 before you can move on to Act 5, which is the expansion.

But the expansion adds two new classes and more stuff, so definitely install it and get the latest patch before you start playing anything.

The expansion requires Diablo 2, hence why it's an expansion, and the Druid and Assassin are amazing, so pick up the expansion.

Plus Act 5 is really fun and the normal game cuts off at Act 4, so you need the expansion.

Definately get the expansion. Defeating Baal is really satisfying. Plus Assassin & Druid are pretty cool.

LoD added a whole new act, 2 new classes, ALOT more weapons/items/enemies, and you can select the LoD to the original characters and there would be different unique enemies you'll encounter over the entire game. It's totally worth it.

Get the expansion. Druids are cool. Although Diablo 2 runs like ass on vista, and Win 7 beta fucks the colors up... No diablo for me... Oh well, I've still got Torchlight: The unofficial Diablo 3.

Get the expansion. Although I wasn't really a fan of either of the two additional classes, the final act is super fun. Also, I think the expansion contains the class-specific equipment (Barbarian helms, Paladin shields etc) and the two weapon load-out feature...
