I don't remember when I first heard that Diablo 3 was coming out, but I do know it was a couple of years ago. I also remember that I was pretty much wetting myself with anticipation: Diablo 2 is my favourite game (though I attribute that to fond memories of playing it from age seven - that game may as well have bloody raised me) and I was and am glad it'll finally be getting a sequel. At the time, the graphics looked positively astounding: that same bleak, gothic style that the first games captured so well brought into the HD generation of gaming.

And since then, we've got... this.

Pretty enough, of course. But this isn't Diablo - it's Warcraft. I'm not looking at Sanctuary, but Azeroth in this picture. Moreover, the class trailers didn't do a lot to help (search the Monk or Demon Hunter trailers on Youtube) and it's all coming together into a game that I'm not even sure I want to play anymore.

So what about you, Escapists? Whether you're fans of the predecessors, or you don't even know what I'm on about, let me hear it: still looking forward to this addition to the series, or are you on the verge of giving up on it?

Excited as all hell. And I for one think blizzard will do a good job. Colors does not = bad. Remember Diablo 2 (which imo was oceans better than the first). There were all kinds of mileus. A gothic cathedral, a dark wilderness, a lush jungle, a dry desert, hell, an icy mountain...etc...variation is the word. I think it will be completely awesome.

I agree with your graphical points, but I also believe we only got a very little taste of what is to come.
I never buy games new at full price, but friends and I already agreed to pre-order and co-op play it. I hope it will stay to it's roots as an action RPG and will not turn into WoW.

Intricate scary story is what I want.

Still looking forward to it here.

People were making the "THIS IS TOO COLOURFUL NEED MOAR GRIMDARK" comments when Diablo II was first announced too.

Just had a look at the combat trailer for that, and it actually looks pretty good. I'm not sure why I haven't heard of it till now, to be honest.

Contrary to popular belief, the whole world isn't graybrownish.

I know that might be confusing, especially if you've been primarily playing FPS games since Diablo 2.

Go back and play through Diablo 2 again. It did actually have some color, believe it or not. I know that seems so far away that it was back when the whole world was in black and white, but I assure you, there were greens and whites and blues and all sorts of other colors that aren't gray, brown, or black in Sanctuary.

Really?

I've always felt that Diablo II was fairly...

Well, depressing.

On topic however, I don't care for the new art style either. It doesn't mean I won't play the game anyways, but the aesthetics bother me.

Its made by the guys who made Titan Quest, though their original company was shut down, but they then formed Crate studios and Grim Dawn looks awesome. Its a bit darker then Diablo 3.

My problem isn't exclusively colour based, it's the feel of it too. And while I'm not pretending to be able to tell what the game plays like from a few screenshots and gameplay trailers, it's clear enough that the style of the environments, characters and even spells is a lot more like what you see in World of Warcraft than what I remember from Diablo II (given that I broke away from playing it to make this thread).

Comparing a drawing to in-game footage is fairly useless. All it does is tell us that particualr scene wasn't hand-drawn and has better lighting.
I know, sorry about that, I was just having trouble finding any early screenshots, as they're greatly outnumbered by the ones showing off the new style. My point was that the screencap doesn't look like it was made from the concept art - it's completely different. And yes, although it's obviously in a different place in the game world, it wouldn't change what the style of the game looked like.

I'll be excited when they release something, so ask me again in 2015.

On a more serious note I will be very cautious with this game, it is quite clear the Activision claws have dug deep into Blizzard now and I don't intend to spend 60$ on another 1/3 of the intended game.

Yeah they really messed up with making it another warcraft spawn.

I loved the old Diablo, gritty dark gothic fantasy that really defined it from the stupid cartoony pooped out mmo's of today. That kind of diablo had such great immersion it kept me coming back for more.

I shed a single tear for old spritetastic Diablo II and shun the new Diablo III.
All you have to do it watch the character into's to see they buggered this up.

NICE ONE BLIZZARD.

Not really all that excited, mostly because it feel to me like Diablo as a concept aged a bit badly and storyline wise they don't seem to offer anything more

As a recovering WoW addict, I can say that Blizzard has a habit of producing products which, on the surface, appear to be lame, or not offer much for content. But more often than not, when a product is released, whether it's a new game, a patch, or added content, they have a track record of being very, very good.

Diablo III is different from Diablo 1 and 2. For some people that's bad. But I'd bet my lunch that you'll buy the game and be blown away.

I certainly hope you're right. The gameplay, to be fair, looks excellent - combat seems to flow in a way it didn't before, which is a vast improvement, and the classes are all nicely varied without being too clichéd. I imagine that, when release day rolls around, this will redeem any qualms I had until then. I've put in my pre-order on Amazon and I'm not so dissatisfied that I'll be cancelling it in the foreseeable future, but I suppose that we'll have to wait and see what they have to say next.

I don't care about the gfx and this game is basicly just a graphical overhaul of the same old diablo2 and I already own that game.

The only thing that could change my mind is an improved control scheme, but that's not likely to happen.
