So apparently shooters are pretty much the most popular console/PC games these days. We get tons of them each year. I'm wondering if the Escapist community is sick of them yet. Sticking mostly to straight shooters, not RPG hybrids.

Let's define "shooter season 2011" as the release period from Resistance 3 to now... since I believe that's what Yahtzee has it as.

That would be (I might be missing something): Resistance 3, Gears of War 3, Hard Reset, Rage (I don't count Rage as having enough "RPG" in it to be disqualified, personally), Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Serious Sam 3, and GoldenEye 007 Reloaded.

So, did you buy and play any of these? What was the best of the bunch? If you skipped it... why?

For me... well the closest I came was replaying Painkiller after being somewhat disappointed by the Hard Reset demo. Personally I'm mostly a single player gamer (unless some great MP comes along, like Raven Shield) and the campaigns these days just don't do it for me. I might pick up Hard Reset in a Steam sale at some point, but the rest are unlikely to ever make it into my collection.

No, I had no intrest in it.
The shooter games are so damn short and mainly focus on Multi-player, which I have no intrest in, so in spite of loving FPS games I haven't bothered.

I bought Gears of war 3 and really enjoyed the multiplayer after being dissapointed with the campaign but that's about it.
Although I am planning to get Battlefield 3 for christmas for the sole reason of I have no clue what else to get.

I bought Gears 3 on release, because I've always been a Gears fan, it's what got me into multiplayer gaming back in 2006. I picked up MW3 because it was $30AU. Yes Australian's you read that right $30 and you can't pass up $30 for a game that RRP at $110. I was also "pressured" into getting BF3 because all my friends (well my online friends, my "real" friends are all playing mw3) are playing it and I got lonely.

Only played Crysis 2.

It was okay, I'm not liking the overly linear nature of shooters nowadays - I was on enough of a rail with Crysis 2, so I'm not sure how linear OTHER, more linear games would be.

Nope, I have very little money so even if one did interest me I wouldn't have been able to afford it anyway.

Last pure fps I've played was original half-life I think.

I really don't see point of fps to tell the truth, you've played one you've played them all. Multiplayer sure, but I have no interest in that.

Interesting that according the poll (so far), escapist readers don't seem to care about fps that much either.

Voted no based on the OP games listed. I did buy Uncharted 3 which is as close to a shooter as I got this year.

I avoid the genre because I don't care for the multiplayer experiences. I'll buy COD games when they get really cheap 5-15 dollars so I can experience the single player campaign only.

Resistance 3 is also on my radar, though I don't care for non-regenerating health systems since I'm really bad at those games. It's quite likely I'd buy the game and never beat it even on the easiest difficulty.

Yes, guilty, your honor. Bought Rage and BF3 (SP and MP reasons) and will buy MW3 when i spot a price drop somewhere (for SP only).

Dunno what's wrong with shooters, in a way they are the hamburgers & hotdogs of todays game market. Everyonce in a while a bit of fastfood is ok, it doesnt have to be a restaurant every day, does it?

I recently (as in, two days ago) bought Duke Nukem Forever which I guess would be like the exhibition match before Shooter Season Proper. Like with the original Assassin's Creed, I see it's faults but don't see why it's hated as much as it is. Granted, it had a 15 year development cycle but as Too Human (I think...Norse Mythology + Space Marines) showed us, long DCs don't really count for much. I plan on grabbing Crysis 2, Rage and, Deus Ex: Human Rev soon after X-Mas if I don't get them then. I don't give two squirts for MW3, Battlefield 3 or, Homefront but it's their own fault for getting lazy with their single-player campaigns (or so I've heard). My PC won't allow me to play Hard Reset but I really want to...and I want Serious Sam 3 but may have to wait until 2012 for that one.

Skipped due to lack of interest - Mass Effect is probably the closest thing to a shooter I've played since Quake 2, aside from a brief daliance with FEAR a few years back...

I played MW3 on my brother's computer for a few rounds, thoroughly enjoyed it. However, it's not something I would pay 60 bucks for. I would pay...20 bucks at most for that game, seeing how I can get the exact same experience with games I already own like Black Ops.

Well, I bought Gears 3, and I haven't regretted it since. It was good, not great, but good. And I'm getting Battlefield 3 for Christmas, I played the beta, and was impressed, and, I've always liked Battlefield games.
