Normal, or Hard... or higher, depending on the game. Hm, can't remember what game it was but i had to go to easy once. Ah well, doesn't matter.

I set my difficulty normaly at "No advantage for me OR the AI - all fair". If i for example play a game based on the D&D rules i set it to hard (Friendly fire for me, normal damage all around)

Give yourself a cookie. Ninja Gaiden is like the big brother of the DMC series and Bayonetta IMO. Though, I have yet to experience a full game of Ninja Gaiden. Completed just about all the Devil May Cries out there though.

I'll start on normal if I haven't played anything in the series before either. But if I have, and I am reasonably good, usually hard

mostly normal or a cross between normal and hard. And then move up if i want more of it. Basically, i'm not a hardcore gamer, if a game don't have a brilliant story and well developed characters, it's toss no matter how hard/easy it is

If it's my first time, normal. Second playthrough, I'll usually pump it up.

However, if I on; have the game for a short time (renting borrowing etc.) I'll put it on the hardest I can.

I start on normal, then hard but usually not any higher. Although I have beaten MGS 3 on European Extreme.

I play Normal when I start; if a game is more or less challenging then I'll adjust the difficulty level.

I almost always pick 'normal' (but if we are talking about MGS, I always pick easy because I suck at it, even at easy XD).

I choose this because, hey, I don't wanna get insane! I just wanna play a game.

Plus, normal helps you know what the game is all about before jumping into a harder setting. Like, sometimes, when i finish a game on normal I'm more than willing to try it on Hard, like I did some time ago with Wario Land 4 (unless the game was frustating enough in normal XD).

Nothing wrong with that at all!

Once again, thanks for all the replies and the current trend is that the majority of people prefer to start out at a normal diffiulty (1:1) and then build up or increase to the hardest during or on the second playthrough.

Anyway, besides reading these comments, I have just been playing a game Larry and the Gnomes on newgrounds (epic!), check it out if you are bored or at work with nothing to do.

I use normal because before I play a game I have no idea what to expect from each difficulty. Which is why games which din't let you switch difficulty mid way are stoopid. I stopped playing torchlight because I practically couldn't die.

Usually I start with hard and change it depending on the ACTUAL difficulty of the game.

For example Alpha Protocol on hard with a Rookie is HARRRRRRRRRRD.

Alpha Protocol is ridiculous at hard when you have no stealth skill. For one, you alert the whole frikin base with just being spotted once only because of some guy spotting you through a door.

depends on game, if stealth (splinter cell) hardest possible, if shooters start off medium and adjust accordingly. which usually becomes hard. if strategies, start off easy, get the hang of it, then to normal, then hardest.
im a big fan of FPS's and strat games, so i usually crank it to the max, and head-shot everything in view (im a patient and sneaky man), and in strat games i usually can counter the hardest strategies almost instantly. (although hate Warcraft 3 melee, played DOTA to long to adjust back to human tower rushes.....).
However lately with games like bad company 2, i have to put it on medium because my comp doesnt like good graphics (jumps at lowest settings, makes MP fun though, sniper FTW).

I'm in a weird group where Easy is too easy and Normal is quite a challenge, so I usually just pick Normal.

Easiest then hardest? I only see from what you posted as you replay the game 4 times going through each difficulty because that my friend, is dedication.
