So, I like Discworld, and I'm just wondering, who else here reads Discworld? Who's your favorite characters?

Mine is Mort, because, well, I love
Code:
D[SMALL]EATH,[/SMALL]
because he's freaking
Code:
D[SMALL]EATH![/SMALL]
How can you not love a character who's freaking
Code:
D[SMALL]EATH![/SMALL]
He's so adorable in his misunderstanding of humanity! How can you not love him!

I second the vote for DEATH. or more specifically SQUEAK who is technically death but...this is more complicated than I thought....

the luggage is a close second. mostly because if I could have a loyal non-human companion from any fictional universe I'd take the luggage.

I've recently started reading the books in order of release and it's been really interesting watching the world develop, the slow shift from fantasy to steampunk and the little easter eggs Pratchett includes when stories are happening simultaneously.

Lord Vetinari is my favourite character. Followed closely by Captain Carrot, Sergeant Angua and Moist Von Lipwig. Death is a brilliant imagining and Binky's just cute.

His latest books are getting a bit tough to read, but that is more than understandable. It's just a shame he's introduced another character called Nobbs (no relation). For those that aren't aware, Terry Pratchett is in the first stages of Alzheimers.

Wait, your favorite character is Mort or your favorite book?

I chose Death as well though because of Soul Music but only marginally. The books centered around Death were my favorite ones (closely followed by the Unseen University and the senior staff thereof). Lord Vetinari is a close 3rd for my favorite Discworld characters and funny enough he's the only one I've tried sketching.

I've only played the board game, which is thoroughly adequate, but everyone I play with loves the books.

Where would one suggest starting with these? As far as I'm aware there are dozens of them.

Hmm, This is a reading list. [http://www.lookoutmountainbookstore.com/home/the-discworld-reading-order-guide-1-5.pdf] If you want to start, you can either go with Color of Magic, I heard Guard! Guards! was a good starting point, though I think Feet Of Clay is a good one. I personally started with Color Of Magic.

Guards, Guards comes before Feet of Clay, so I'd start there if you want the city watch stories.

"Hello, I'm Moist. Don't Ask."

I put my vote down for Vimes, but in retrospect I would have gone for Gaspode.

I like Carrot, in fact the guards tend to be my favorite theme. Discworld novels are awesome, so inherently funny, Terry Pratchet is a genius. Hell, I almost cried at the end of Guards Guards, I mean Pratchet managed to get the same response as the end of LOTR, when Aragorn says the Hobbits bow to nobody, he got that same effect with a bloody dartboard!

I just wish they'd do a proper, decent Discworld game - something like Fable when it was still good :D.

I love the Discworld series more than anything I've ever read. It's so difficult to pick a favourite character!

I voted for Sam Vimes in the poll, but mostly as a vote for the whole city watch. Does any one else get the feeling that they're Pratchett's favourite too? As the series has gone on the overall focus has definitely shifted from Rincewind to Vimes. I think my favourite is The Fifth Elephant, if only for the gloomy trousers.

Favourite solo character though? It's got to be Vetinari: Literature's most reasonable Tyrant.

I read them completely out of order and I'm glad I did. Going back, after I had already become a fan of the series, to read The Colour of Magic I really didn't enjoy it that much. The first one I read was Interesting Times, which is part of the reason why I actually thought that Two-flower had 4 eyes as opposed to glasses!

Got to be Sam Vimes, the man who taught me that cynicism is only good if you get to arrest the people making you cynical. Also, his relationship with Sybil is actually one of the better ones I've read in fiction.

Sam Vimes is fantastic, love pretty much every book he's in.

If I had to pick a second favourite it'd be Ridcully the wizard. I've always liked that he's both silly and ridiculous, yet every once and awhile deceptively clever as well. Just clever enough to make one wonder what he's really thinking or if he really is the buffoon he's so often dismissed as.

Vetinari! The best argument for an autocracy I've ever seen - efficient, innovative, intelligent, savvy, but what really takes the cake is that the man knows how to put on a show. He's got Style, with a capital S. The man had a clock specially built for his office so that it never ticks QUITE when you think it will. He Organized Crime. He controls everything, and is SO GOOD at it that no one dares to try and assassinate him - even the assassins won't take contracts out on him because no one else could do what he does.

But those are just details that contribute to an intriguing character. What makes Vetinari my favourite is his presence, his expert, sparingly used silver tongue, and all those things that really come together to form, or are manifestations of, his character.

I could go on, but I'm too busy reading the series again to bask in how awesome it is.

Runners-up status goes to: Vetinari (he's that awesome), Vimes, the Librarian, Lu Tze, DEATH, Cohen the Barbarian, and 71-Hour Ahmed. Yes, some of these guys don't show up much, but Ahmed was pretty awesome, let's face it.

Vimes all the way. The Guards books are my favourite. But Lord Vetinari, Nanny Ogg, Death and Mustrum Ridcully are all awesome as well.

Actually, there are too many awesome characters to name.

Can someone answer me why Lord Vetinari isn't on this list? I mean seriously you don't miss that guy off when it comes to important lists - he's the guy that talked Rincewind into looking after Twoflower and has Sam Vimes working FOR him.

OOK!

I love the books revolving around the watchmen so I'll say Vimes. Runners up include Moist, Vetinari, Granny Weatherwax and Sergeant Jackrum.

Favourite book by a narrow margin is probably Night Watch, in part due to The Glorious People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road.

I've read a few books and really enjoyed them. My favorite character would be Vimes, seeing as how much of a badass he is. Other favorites include Death (really should get around to reading his books), Angua, Nobby and Carrot. Also, the Librarian and "Bloody Stupid Johnson", 'cause who else would make an exploding sundial and a fountain that fires it's cherub statue into the air?

Favorite books at the moment are "Thud!", "Jingo", and "Nightwatch", though like I said, I'm planning to get more...
