So, District 9....this upcoming film (directed by Peter Jackson) is apparently coming out in ten or so days, and I was wondering what the community thought as far as this movie is concerned.

For those of you unfamiliar with District 9, here's a plot summary from Wikipedia:

Wikipedia said:
In the movie, aliens made first contact with Earth twenty-eight years prior to the beginning of the film, after which humanity waited for either a hostile attack or for giant advances in technology, though neither came. Instead, the aliens that arrived were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them. Patience over the alien situation ran out and control over them was contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare. MNU stands to receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' advanced weaponry work.

MNU, thus far, has failed in making the alien weaponry work, for activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. Tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable, for he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Van der Merwe becomes ostracized and friendless and comes to hide in District 9.
And here are two trailers for District 9, courtesy of Pajiba:

The higher-ups in charge of marketing District 9 have put up several viral websites as well, kind of like Cloverfield. Here's a link to MNU Spreads Lies, a faux documentary blog made by an 'alien rights advocate,' and D-9, the main viral website with plenty of trailers and backstory fragments.

So, post away, and share your thoughts on this intriguing new movie.

I like the Idea, even though it's highly unlikely we would be able to hold an entire alien ship of that magnitude hostage... I mean if they could get to us, than most likely they can probably kick our asses with ease

It's definitely one of the more intriguing movies coming out this year. I'm definitely going to check it out, not ASAP, but in due time.

It looks like a interesting concept and should be worth a watch.

That's pretty much my fault with the story. It seems a little unrealistic. Mind you being unrealistic doesn't stop something being entertaining so hopefully it will turn out good.

I think it'll be a pretty solid action movie, and I'm open to its potential to be even better than that. Even if it's absolutely shitty, I'm fairly certain I'll still like it.

Looks pretty sweet- I say a video of concept stuff a couple years ago and didn't know what it was for. Now it makes sense. I hope it gets good reviews- after Transformers, I need a good action movie to restore my faith in Hollywood (and humanity).

I'm really looking forward to this too. It has a solid concept wrapped in a coating of sci-fi goodness. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

It was a well made movie. The acting was great. The camera work was excellent. The special effects were top notch. The plot was even very good. But through the whole movie and especially at the end all I was left with was the fact that I really hate the human race. It made me feel like we are all really just a bunch of squabbling savage animals. The behavior of the people in the movie made me sick inside and really depressed. I feel like I wish I did not watch the movie to tell you the truth. What a fucking mess. What is even more depressing is that Africa and lots of other places on earth are really like this minus the aliens. It makes me feel the universe would be better off with out us. I need to go watch something funny and light hearted to wash the movie from my mind.

Having now seen it I gotta say I was impressed. I really felt for the aliens and their plight, real emotional sympathy and genuine disgust at the way humans treated them. It has relevance to the world right now, the action scenes are well done, the characters are interesting and well put together and overall it is a unique and very clever film.
If nothing else it helped me reaffirm my general hatred of the human race.

In all honesty I have no interest in seeing it. Now given all the positive reviews I may be inclined to rent it, but I certainly am not going to rush off to see it at the theaters. Trying to save cash for the games I want this year anyway.

I just got back from seeing it, and I can safely say that it reeks of all things average. Though it was brilliantly put together with amazing special effects, the corniness and unbelievability of the first "documentary" part of the movie in addition to schizophrenic action sequences make it a cross between an edge-of-your-seat experience and a trite snorefest.

I don't think so at all.

Remember when he knocks out Christopher to save his own skin, even though he'd be dead without his help? Sounds like he's pretty dumb to me.

well since none of this ever actually happened, im a bit curious as to what the documentary parts would have been other than unbelievable. if you were looking for a straight action movie, then i suppose i can see how you might use the word snorefest, but otherwise im going to have to disagree with you there. i thought it was amazing that this movie compelled you even when nothing was blowing up, and even more so that it was its own movie; this isnt a cookie-cutter movie in any genre, and while its not an entirely original idea at least its treading ground that hasnt been explored, tilled, farmed, razed, and salted to death by a million movies before it. the idea of an alien race's first contact with humanity ending with conflict that mirrors real-life xenophobia on earth has been done before in the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and with mostly the same message: human beings are the most savage animals on the planet and are capable of cruelty to one another on a scale which is unimaginable for any other species on the planet. the added element of wikis turning into an alien himself brings in another element of symbolism; he seems incapable of acting humanely to another species until he almost becomes one of them, and even after the transformation is complete he is unwilling to let go of his humanity. overall, if you look past the fact that this is infact a cerebral movie with more to it than gunplay and explosions, you could spend quite a while exploring the symbols and themes of it in much the same way you would a great literary work, and while it is mostly alone in recent movies in this regard i still hold it up as a decidedly positive step for hollywood and wish them to continue in this direction.
