They're completely right, atleast, they are in that regard.

It's what you do in that uniform.

Anyone can be a hero. Soldiers are not an exception.

It really depends I mean you can't ignore those stories of soldiers being severly wounded and still fighting, or being the last one alive and not giving up, sacrificing themselves to save civillians or their fellow soldiers (it doesn't happen often, but I've read stories about all of those), however you also can't ignore war crimes (the US has had a few isolated incidents in Iraq)

Hero is entirely subjective. A hero on one side is a monster on the other. A Muslim suicide bomber and a trigger-happy Christian soldier are both be called heroes, it just depends at which propaganda mill you shop at.

Seconded

OT: Yes. Watch Saving Private Ryan and if you don't call any of the people who went to go get Ryan then I'll slap you in the face.

In the real world people die for a purpose and not calling them heroes result is dieing in vain.

Maybe not a hero, but they definitely deserve your respect. They put their lives on the line to fight for our protection.

One does not get hero status just for joining the military, that's just ridiculous. If a soldier does something that saves the lives of either civilians or fellow soldiers could be considered a hero. That being said, hero is subjective, one man's hero is another man's demon.

I bring the topic to you guys for judging. Does having the status of soldier makes you a "hero"?
I think all soldiers (on any side, of any conflict) can potentially be heroes. However, I don't think that all soldiers act heroically in all circumstances.

I think that a soldier's role is a very important one, and therefore it's a role that carries an enormous responsibility. For this reason, I don't think that putting people up on a pedestal by default is very wise.

Not all soldiers are heroes by default. BUT I do respect them for being people who are willing to go into dangerous situations for what they believe in. If its unjust, I blame the politicians who set up the situation.

Some of them do, the one that go above and beyond their duty (and killing is part of their duty) are heroes. But the only heroes I know are dead or disabled (it takes a lot of bullets before I call you a hero.) And for those of you about to whine how "if you had served you would say they were all heroes" I did serve, so I know better than the people that haven't served whether or not every soldier is a hero.

Fucking ignorant kids. They don't respect the sacrifice it took to give them the freedom to be ignorant pricks, and the sacrifices paid now to keep that freedom alive. Just another reason for me to despise schools that don't teach military history.
I think you're missing the point.
Just a wee bit.

Soldiers are soldiers. I will respect and support them for all that they do for me. However, I wouldn't ever call them heroes unless they've done something heroic. Saving a life instead of ending one for example.

Also, calling another person 'hero' feels odd. Anyone else feel the same way about that?

*sigh* yet more complete ignorance on matters people like that should just stay out of; I am of course referring to the people making the petition to remove the group.

The group is absolutely correct. Becoming a soldier does not make you a hero.

People become heroes by their own actions, and their own actions alone. 'Heroes' can be anyone, and of any profession, and it can occur through any one (or more) of a number of means. Not because you put on a uniform and go fight in a war; especially with today's military equipment.

However, this of course does not prevent soldiers from becoming heroes; indeed, there are many soldiers who do deserve to be called heroes (although they may not feel that way, in which case their opinion is to be respected just the same as anyone else's).

The group points out the logical fallacy many people fall into in regards to (in this case) the military... and they are being shot down for it.

Typical.

Well, that's my take on it anyway. Of course, the haters can dislike it as much as they damn well please, but my contempt for them starts when they start forcing that opinion on others. That facebook group has its place as much as pretty anything else has theirs. People should be able to make up their own minds; not have their minds essentially made up for them by shunning and hiding thoughts and ideas that don't agree with another persons.

I just realised that I managed to say all that WITHOUT invoking Godwin's Law somehow.

In short;
Soldiers do not automatically deserve the title, but if an individual or group of soldiers pull off a beyond-the-call-of-duty feat that saves lives, or undertakes an especially dangerous and important mission that also saves lives in the long run, then they deserve to be called heroes. Well, as long as they don't say they don't want to be called heroes, anyway.

First, I love your avatar :D. Second, why do you think that is?

I'd imagine it might have something to do with "there is no heroism in killing others" or something similar.

It depends the person and the situation if you ask me. There are many soldiers that do not deserve the title, more then many that give the military a bad name, but there are also true heros too.
