Just want to see the general view here, see what people think about the roles that the Japanese developers are playing today and what you think they will do/should do in the future.

No, we have enough western games, we don't need the Japanese making them too. One thing I will say is that I dislike the anime look that shows up in the Tales games and the DQ games.

Japan has there own way at looking at thins and the west has ours leave each one to there own devices. If you don't like how the Japanese do it thats your thing.

They shouldn't cater to anyone.

They should just make good games and the audience wil come regardless of nationality.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-

To not steal Yahtzee quotes, I wouldn't ask a man to carry a baby, I wouldn't ask a dog to feed it's pups by regurgitating into their mouths, and I wouldn't ask a Japanese developer to cater to foreign tastes. If one wants to, I won't stop them, but if another doesn't want to, I won't force them either.

I agree with pretty much everyone here. To answer you question: No.

I do think it would be awesome to get more games in styles from more countries. Then we wouldn't be having this conversation. Everyone would just make they're own stuff and we would play the best of all of it. :)

Nah. I like the mixing of cultures we get nowadays, at least in the North of America. By which I mean Canada.

I kind of wish they'd embrace their roots a bit more, to be honest. Let's get a bit more ancient, benevolent, architecturally-sound gods in there.

Developers should make good games that they want to make. A game made by developers who'd rather be making something else is not a good game.

No, that's a really bad idea.

Also, what would going back to their roots even entail?

They have several games that cater to use already, I fact if you look at a lot of Japanese games the character models look very Western.

Some of the thigns that make Japanese games so compelling is how different they are because of the culture. I wouldn't have found Persona 4 as fascinating if it took place in an American town or culture.

Why should Japanese developers go out of their way to cater to the west when so many of their Japanese-targeted games are in such high demand in the west?

Just look at Catherine and the Mother series!

If they want to, sure. If they don't want to, fine by me too.

If their goal is to sell well in Western markets, it might be a wise decision, but it's their choice.

Do you mean in a way that I wouldn't be able to distinguish that it's a Japanese game? Or like Deadly Premonition where the setting is American, but the game has weirdness only the Japanese could think of?

No. Japanese developers cater to Japan....and THEN their games get exported. I fail to see everyones problem with Japanese games, saying they are too weird. They are made for an entirely different culture. And considering their stories are generally better written than most western (I.E. American, since extremely few get made by anywhere else), it should be the other way around.
