What with online gaming on the up and up over the last few years, i've begun to wonder, do people buy games nowadays more for the story mode, the multiplayer mode, or for both?

Just to clarify, in this case...

Story mode includes: solo AND/OR co-op playing through the game's story/campaign

Multiplayer includes: having mates round and playing together offline AND/OR playing online against people from around the world.

Personally, im a story mode guy, but that's just me

That depends.

Games like Mass Effect? It's all about the solo experience.

Games like Call of Duty? I couldn't give a shit about the single player campaign, I'm just here to frag dudes and troll 13 year old Americans.

Story. I play both, but I very rarely do any multiplayer until I've finished the story. I'm a bit of a lone wolf, me.

Depends, does the game have more of a focus on story or multiplayer? See, most developers can't really focus on both at the same time, so a game will usually either have a good story OR good multiplayer, but not both.

I have a PS3 and until I get a modem my PSN online access is shaky depending on who has security to Wi-Fi I can jack. Single player is what I'm mostly interested in with Multi-Player as an added benefit. In this case I'm down to choices like these..

LBP 2 [no online] vs Fallout New Vegas.

I still haven't chosen :(

I look for games that have the most appealing story modes. The only times I look for games with multiplayer is when I want a free game e.g. mmos, combat arms etc.

I really don't feel it's worth it to spend the money to play online seeing as how I hardly ever spend much time playing them.

That's completely subjective. I bought the Halo games for MP, but I bought L.A. Noire for single. It really depends on the game.

I (usually) enjoy the narrative much, much more than I enjoy the multiplayer experience. Whenever there are games that have lots of collectibles, I skip those (side quests even sometimes), just to find out what happens next.
All because I can hear/read/watch a story without thinking (on purpose), so I like the story better.
Now I need to work on getting rid of so many parentheses.

I enjoy both, but I tend to buy for the solo and stick around for the multiplayer..

Whatever, just wash your hands.
really it depends, I got bad company 2 for the multi, I still played tho the single but I mostly was focused on multi, Im also gonna buy battlefield 3 for the multi since thats what dice is really good at, maybe the single player will kick ass but its not my main point

cod 4 tho, I only got for the single, I ended up really liking the multi but since the single player was so short I didnt get it till it came with a video card I bought

Story mode.

Multiplayer has only been a concern in Demon's Souls. And the only games that I'm looking at where multiplayer is a factor are Dark Souls and Dust 514.

I'm sorry bit I think quite a few people are lying. Most the people on my steam friends list I see are on multiplayer games, and about 5-10% of the time are on single player. Story normally holds no replay for me, and recent games have had atrocious stories.

Story, always. Any multiplayer is a bonus.

The obvious exceptions are Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. Left 4 Dead of course tells an amazing story, but the multiplayer in it enhances that so much it's hard to ignore.
