I was playing minecraft single player like everyone and was mining away, making stuff on my crafting table and furnace with my huge underground mine and above ground castle. Then I found out my friend was also playing minecraft but being better at IT then me he had made his own server and was giving himself all the material he needed. He also set the difficulty down to peaceful.

So he didn't need to mine or craft his stuff and he didn't have to deal with monsters. I personally consider playing like this almost cheating the game. I had to mine the material for my castle while he magically gave himself his, I also have to battle monsters at night while he just resets the time to day.

Is he just playing the game? Or is he cheating?

Does my castle count for more even though it's smaller but was actually built with mined material or is his the same if not better?

Do you guys 'cheat'?

Yes, on single player, to get a buttload of TNT and make a really nice explosion that destroyed an entire mountain range. Other than that, no.

Some people are in Minecraft for the building, some for the mining / exploring, some for the monsters. And some of us can't be bothered with one or two of those three (like me with those monsters). If all he wants is to build I wouldn't really mind if he fixed it to get the blocks he needed. He's just playing a part of the game that he wants to play as far as I see it.

Do they really count for anything? Over all it is just a game. And seeing as you were compairing sizes, have you met my friend Freud?

No I don't "cheat".

Play however you want to, it's your game.

I, personally, do not hack in materials - I find it a lot more rewarding to craft out of my surroundings.

Depends why you play minecraft. If you enjoy the creative building, I don't see why you should be forced to grind for several days straight to get the materials. However if you enjoy building your mine and killing zombies then no one is going to put you down for it.

If just for that, creative is the option.

No I don't cheat and yes giving yourself stuff is cheating, as I said above go play creative if you want to do big project but to lazy to farm the materials.

I've used single player commands before to build things. Basically I've used it as my own personal creative server. I've shared some of my things, but I've always made it clear that I did mod the items into my inventory. There are some things that you simply cannot build alone without magicing items into your inventory. But then again, I never play games the way developers want me to play them.

I've also built things with mined materials. I know the input of time needed to build them, a resource that I honestly don't have enough of.

I cheat because it allows me to do what I normally wouldn't, and it doesn't effect other people's gameplay. I still considered it cheating technically because it does break the games rules, although I don't consider it a bad thing.

I will use InvEdit if it crashes and I loose 3 hours of work (stupid giant obsidian skull) but otherwise I play legit all the time.

on my server i hand out free diamond tools to the players... but other then that, all materials used must be gathered themselfs.
i just didnt find it fun to use 10 stone picks when u can just use 1 diamond for the same job.

then if they want to build something. they have to mine it, cut it, craft it, farm it. etc etc
i just helped to speed the natural progress up

My main world, I don't cheat at all.
I do have another world where I try stuff out or just mess about making huge structures out of interesting materials or otherwise experiment, I use X-ray and InvEdit. Even then, its often just for tools.

Assuming this is only in singleplayer; who cares, even if it is considered cheating? Minecraft isn't a game with explicit goals, players can achieve what they want however they want as far as I'm concerned.

I sometimes use InvEdit to give myself a bunch of TNT. I filled a mine system I'd dug with it, then blew it up. There was a massive fissure across the ocean, and I was really quite chuffed with it.

i wouldn't consider it cheating, its just being lazy. for me building the big cool thing is all the cooler for having mined every cube, and crafted every item. not to mention surviving all the monsters.

my girlfriend on the other hand cant stand trying to deal with monsters while she is building, and so plays on peaceful, but its just personal choice

Depends on my mood whether I cheat or not. It also depends on what I plan to be building. If I want to build a giant obsidian monolith to the stars, no way in hell I'm mining all that.

Normally no, but if the line between working for the payoff and grinding blur then yes.

well i put no, yes.

simply because:

A. the only person you are cheating is yourself, so therefore it doesnt matter in any way.
B. i only /give myself stuff on my multi player server to test exactly how many blocks or items i will need to build the stuff i want on my single player file.
because then i dont end up with half assed, unfinished crap, and my single player flourishes, (legitimately).

for example, i found a spawner in my single player yesterday, and instead of risking all those monsters killing me and any problems i might have, i started up my server, placed a spawner (pig), and begun building a trap, using the /give command, to find out exactly how much material i would need, how much time it would take, and what i need to stop them spawning for the time being, also find out what trap i could actually make.
