So after watching Yahtzee bash Valkyria Chronicles, a game that I enjoyed thoroughly. I feel almost compelled to defend it. Instead I'll try to better understand the opinions of those who agree with Yahtzee's disdain towards JRPG's. And try to discuss things in a orderly manner though it may just turn into a clusterf^$* or just be ignored altogether.

EDIT: I am sorry I fail at search button but I do not see a delete thread button to correct my mistake.

I don't like some of the staples of the genre but overall I'd say I liked JRPGs, I still look bakc on FF 7 with found memories.

Don't we already like have a thread, with the exact same name, just slighty different poll? Can be found here:

I do not hate JRPG's. The Final Fantasy series has given me much joy over the years, Pokemon Red/Blue is still a favorite.
Also, I tend to judge a game by itself, not according to the genre it belongs to. Not to say that I don't have preferences, but I will not dismiss a brilliant RPG, just because it happens to be a JRPG.

No, no I do not hate JRPGs. And I will not listen to anyone who parrots Yahtzee by calling all the protagonists girly-boys!

I'm fine with JRPGs. I have no issue with the characters (Even though the effeminate male characters make my eyes bleed a bit), I have never come into contact with one that had horrible gameplay to me. My only major issue with JRPGs, and anime/manga in general is the ridiculously deep storylines. They always throw out plot twists, so you never know what the fuck is going on.
Also, it doesn't help that I can't tell the difference from Yukashaka-ding-dong from Mekelekahiney-ho over there.

I have a counterpoint to Mr. Croshaw's argument:

He's never reviewed a Persona game.

No, I do not. And I shall share with you this piece of wisdom I have figured out.

Yahtzee speaks irrelevant drivel, which is completely outlandish and un-true. But he's funny, and provides much lulz.

Bad source of info.
Good source of lulz.

hate, no.
despise, yes.
not all of course, but i have yet to come across one that isn't absolutely yam, and i guess that won't happen cause i avoid that genre because of that few stereotypical games i've played.

wait... isnt this... like 3 threads below this one? The same title? I really prefer to be nice and would hope would never have had to say this but... USE THE SEARCH BUTTON... or better yet, scan the first page to see if what your going to make a thread about is already there.

Actually, I think you might have just used the other thread and just blatantly copied it, perhaps.

But, the impression I got from the majority of the comments were that they agreed with him and took his opinion as fact, which is why I had to say something, and in my rush ignored threads very similar to this that which I could have ranted in.

I take a different approach, I don't hate 'JRPGs', but I do utterly hate the misnomer of JRPG. The genre of JRPG is nothing but a horribly named fantasy/sci-fi genre, as the letters RPG would dictate some level of role playing or deep personal interaction. I love some JRPGs, Shadow Hearts 2 and FF12 being prime examples of games that I couldn't get enough of. But that doesn't change the fact they should not be identified in the same breath as games like Mass Effect, Planescape: Torment, WoW, or Fallout. Those games, they are YOU playing, a reflection of yourself in that world at any given time.

If you can relate deeply to the likes of JRPG heroes like Cloud Strife, that's great, but I'm confident you're in a very small minority.

He probably won't for a while, if ever. If he reviews games that he may like, he won't get far less traffic than he does now. Negativity sells.

I'm a huge RPG fan, but I do see many flaws with JRPG's. The stories are sometimes childish and in some games, the stories downright suck. Final Fantasy, however, is my favorite series and I believe it does many things right. I also enjoy the Persona series, but I'm often turned off of being a fan of the genre by games like The Tales Series, or Star Ocean, or Grandia.

Have him review Persona 3 then and go on about the dating system.
I like Persona, but the Reese's argument comes up.

"You got JRPG in my dating sim!"
"You got dating sim in my JRPG!"

He has lots of fanboys. Most of them agree with him whatever he says.

The story is always weak in JRPG's.
I'd say, Japanese story-telling, in general, is very poor. Given that videos games always have the worst narratives of any medium, JRPG's fall in the center of that Venn Diagram.
