I remember in one of the Jimquisition videos, he once saw a poll in the threads that he paid attention to in order to get feedback on how he was doing, and considering the recent uproar around Moviebob's "The Most 50 Boring Opinions in Geek Culture" list, I thought that now would be a good time to take stock on Moviebob and the material he puts out.

It's a rather simple question really, do you like him and his material?

EDIT: Edited the OP to make it more clear.

Maybe I'm not paying enough attention but I don't see any difference between what he did in the past and what he is currently doing. He's always had...strong opinions and has never really been afraid to speak said opinions. A lot of times I agree with him and other times I don't; either way I find it entertaining.

Could you be a bit more specific with what you're talking about?

Never liked him to start with.

For the most part it's like listening to Chronic Flatulence after a Vindaloo the amount of hot air he blows while talking out of his arse.

If you agree with him, you like him. If you don't, you don't. It's that simple. His personality isn't terribly offputting to me, maybe because I'm just as forward with my own likes and dislikes. I read what he writes, watch his videos every week, and don't look for hidden meaning behind his words because there usually isn't one to find. If he feels strongly about something he will mention it more than once but won't turn it into a habit as that gets old real fast. He's a critic, a critic with an intimate knowledge of Japanese monster movies. That is all.

He's entertaining and knowledgable, but also a rather obvious hypocrite. I can't say I've seen any real shift in what he's been doing lately so I'm not sure where exactly the issue is.

Sure.

Although I haven't seen a whole lot of change. He might've seen how many comments Jim's been getting as of late and decided to become a bit more ... edgy isn't really the right word, but y'know what I mean?

And that's okay with me.

Didn't notice he was taking a new direction..... but I've liked his recent stuff as much as the older stuff so I guess, yes?

Eh, he's a pretty good entertainer in his reviews and his style does lend itself well to what it does. I tend to prefer The Big Picture to Escape to the Movies as in the former he may mention his bias but doesn't factor it into what he's saying, whereas in the latter his bias affects the whole review. I take his EttM vids with a grain of salt as I've found myself disagreeing greatly on the quality of several movies he's reviewed (both ways, some he said were bad were good [I really didn't mind Green Lantern] and vice versa [Salt was terrible])

I'm with every one else wondering if there has been a significant shift in his style that I haven't noticed.

As to my opinion on Bob, I enjoy all his content on the Escapist. Big Picture is usually very interesting, and even if I'm well read on the subject I still find it entertaining to watch. Same goes for Escape to the Movies, although I rarely go see films in cinemas, I still like to hear what people think about them so I can maybe picked them up on DVD. I find that Bob's taste in movies more or less line up with my own. If he highly recommends a movie, I'll probably enjoy it. And finally, Intermission is always a fun and interesting read.

I think what I enjoy most about Bob's material is the variety. You never know what topic or format the next Big Picture or Intermission is going to be, so it stops things from getting stale.

Maybe its because I never like him in the first place but I haven't really seen any change in his work. Also I just read the "The 50 Most Boring Opinions in Geek Culture" piece and while I didn't like it overall what real stood out is #5 seems Massively hypocritical coming from the guy who invented the "game underthinker"

I find Big Picture interesting and well researched and his reviews in Escape to the Movies are often interesting even if I disagree with him at times, which is perfectly acceptable for a review.

The dislike of Dark Knight Rises is really starting to get annoying. To be specific, I don't have a problem with the fact MovieBob didn't like it - everyone has different tastes after all - but almost every 2nd episode there's a comment about how much he didn't like it.

When he mentions "Some movies this year were great, some not so great..." you can guarantee one of the stills we be of Rises. Similarly this week when talking about great movie villains he makes the point of explicitly kicking Bane out of the Pantheon - a Pantheon, I might add, that includes the forgettable Red Skull and... someone... who I'm pretty sure half the viewers don't even know who it is.

Okay, you don't like Rises. We get it. But you are absolutely in the minority in your hatred (dislike is one thing, but this is... something else), and the fact that you feel the need to continually state how much you hate it in reviews and essays on topics completely unrelated to Rises is REALLY starting to grate.

Don't have any problems with him, just the fact that he's been reviewing a fair few movies that I'd never go see.

Has his material on the Escapist been changing direction? I really don't see it.

I mean, I have been watching his movie reviews long before he came to the Escapist.

I used to watch his Game Overthinker videos, up until he rolled out the craptastic "antithinker" character. Now, that was a change that killed off any interest I had in the show. Fortunately, that idiocy hasn't brought to his Escapist shows.

Whatever direction Moviebob is taking still feels quite ordinary to me as far as film reviews go. He seems to like what people like and not like what people don't like. Not that that is a bad thing or anything. But I bet Yahtzee could make better film reviews.

"The 50 Most Boring Opinions in Geek Culture" feels like a one-off, or a misfire, or an indication that Bob really hates Christmas and had some grinch to get out of his system, rather than a new direction. The Escapist has Jim and Yahtzee to do the ascerbic, confrontational thing already - we don't need more of the same.

In general though, I really like Escape to the Movies, Big Picture and Intermission. Bob knows his stuff and even when I disagree with him he's usually thought provoking and often funny.
