So lately, with the launch of Season ten of Red versus Blue I find that me and my friends are pretty split on whether the direction they are taking is a good one.

I personally love the new action scenes, the backstory of freelancer and it trying to at least have a serious story to go with the humor (Which they've been getting closer and closer to since season 5)

However a few of my friends believe that its a departure from what made RvB great, stupid soldiers doing stupid shit in a stupid canyon, and to a certain measure, I agree.

So I bring it to the Escapist community, do you like where RvB is going and has done since the end of the blood gulch chronicles? Or do you think it's lost its soul?

TL;DR Do you like the new RvB seasons?

For me it was a bit jarring that suddenly there was a big plot and I had to pay attention all of a sudden or be lost to what was going on.

However seeing alot of the new season, the show still manages to make me laugh whilescratching the itch of seeing Spartans be awesome. Something that happened very rarely back in ye' olden days of the series. So I like it, even if sometimes I have to rewatch old episodes(Or read the comments on any given video, they explain what goes on really well!) to be able to keep up with what's going on at some points in the story.

It's still going on? The last time I watched the show has to have been at the least six years ago, maybe even more.

I'm actually quite surprised/impressed with the stuff they've come up with, shadowy plots, the whole AI premise, and the more serious tone, yet keeping the charm of their comedy roots.

The whole stupid soldiers do stupid stuff has evolved into a deep plot with charming characters.
And the last few episodes from the new season were awesome.
Hoping for a confrontation between The Director and Epsilon/Church though...>,<

And Caboose.
Yeah....Caboose^^

I was never a huge fan of the humour in the opening seasons and I think the plot they've spun up is an awful convoluted mess.

However, I find myself oddly attached to the characters, stupid though they are.

Also, the new animated action scenes are bloody awesome. That one on the highway was well and truly off the hook. I'll put up with as many ridiculous plotlines as they care make, so long as there's a few power armour punch-ups thrown into the mix.

the fight with the jet pack troopers was amazing. An interesting twist on how to use the jet pack not only for mobility, but for offensive and defensive purposes too.

The show still has its moments of comedy, it is not quite the side splitting humor from the old series, but ill be @#$%ed if they dont have the greatest action scenes ive ever seen.

Also, the music during fight scenes is pretty good. Honestly im surprised with how well they are doing in this new direction, i did not think they had it in them.

I think it is a fun contrast between the most competent soldiers of the galaxy and working with the most incompetent soldiers in the galaxy and watching how they interact. A good example: Carolina: SYNC. Caboose: Refrigerator.

There has been a good mix so far of the usual RvB humor and total badassery brought to you by Monty Onum.

As a side note. I can't believe the jump in quality from 8 to 9 to 10 in the Freelancer/combat sections. Hell just the quality of the effects in many internet produced videos has jumped dramatically within the last few years.

It's still great, though I would love them to have subtitles :( My dad loves the show, but he doesn't know English, and I stopped translating at ~50th episode - too much work.

While I do miss the older stuff, I think it's nice that the show is actually evolving instead of wearing out the same routine over and over again. Also the stupid stuff is still part of it, and in a sense it's now funnier when they have actual soldiers around like Washington reacting to it.

Also the fight scenes kick ass, and York is brilliant.

I don't really watch it regularly, but the new stuff is still pretty funny at times.

Personally I thought they were stretching quite a bit even with Season 9, seeing as how Season 8's ending was so definite and final. The story really was pretty much over and everyone was ready to move on with their lives. Then we get the Freelancer prequel season...

I'm not saying the new stuff is bad, but as numerous people have already mentioned: I like the humor of the older seasons. The newer seasonns has definitely taken some talent points out of the Humor tree and put them into Action, as while we're definitely getting some pretty amazing fight scenes like that Zero-G fight in the hanger, we're no longer getting the side-splitting comedy as seen when they're talking to the Alien for the first time with the bomb that also serves as a translator.

Wait, its STILL going!!?? Man... I stopped watching when they began to migrate to Halo 3. that was a LONG time ago haha. Around that same time the DVDs vanished from gamestops and everyone stopped talking about it. I just assumed it's fans lost interest shortly after me.

I just contributed it all to the growing decline in halo's appeal around the net.

Well I think that the PSA's and things they do every now and again are great but I HATE HATE storylines or plot elements in web shows, reviews etc. I can't stand them especially when they are complicated as hell (like Red vs. blue) but I love the original 100 episodes they were amazing and that season where they get use to halo 3 was good but I just can't muster up the effort to watch all the episodes and seasons I've missed since then if it means I have to deal with shitty stroylines.

Ehhh... I enjoyed it a lot up to episode 100, then there was an awful slump through the next few seasons (seriously, they were so forgettable I literally can't remember a thing about them apart from the fact that there were AIs). Then it got pretty good again in the first series which had Montyoum's animation, since they seemed to do pretty well at reviving the humour while injecting the action. Then after that...

Well, I just totally lost interest over the next series or so. The biggest problem for me was that the Freelancers were totally unlikable; they spent loads of massive fight sequences killing dozens of people and blowing up a skyscraper while acting really smug about it and every time I saw them fighting I was supporting the other guys. But of course, the Freelancers just win at everything and happily pull abilities out of their ass because hey, that's what they do. It wouldn't have been so bad if they'd kept the original characters rather than replacing them with Church's AI figments of them, making it impossible to care about them as well.

I dunno, maybe I'll look into any newer series if they toned down the unrelenting 'ohmygoshthey'resoawesome' Freelancer action and gave a broader emotional tale than just Church's point of view. Actually I realise that last point sounds really pretentious, sooo...

So... How many characters are left? Dont bother naming Freelancers because they were just so forrgettable that.. Well.. I've forgot them.

No, I preferred the first hundred episodes, when it was just red and blue and lots of shenanigans. Too serious nowadays, not nearly as fun to watch.
Agreed. While I do concur that Monty Oum is a fucking beast and a half, after the Blood Gulch Chronicles, the series seemed to focus a little too much on the whole AI project and it eventually turned into something like "The Adventures of L.L. Church featuring those other guys" (don't believe me? watch Reconstruction again).

Not to mention that when Rooster Teeth actually starting focusing on overarching story elements, when you match everything up across the series, it raises gargantuan plot holes (such as what the fuck Church even was before the tank incident in Season 1). So yeah, I also prefer the Blood Gulch Chronicles. I miss Grif and Simmons arguing about everything.

I have to say...

As funny as the first lot of episodes were... nothing really happened in them. I love they way they now combine three different kind of scenes into the episodes:

1. The Blood Gulch Crew being funny and stupid as shit

2. Epic Freelancers being Epic. I mean, come on, you can't beat the part where they jumped off the tower and that music made it sooo much better. Also: ARE WE IN A CAR?!?

3. The Crossovers. When the best and worst soldiers meet, hilarity insures. E.G. Carolina: Sync, Simmons: Sync, Caboose: Easy Bake Oven.

Also, the characters are amazing. All of them are funny and awesome in their own right. York is my favourite freelancer. I loved the way the freelancers did an epic pose... and then York flew in and crash landed on the deck. Washington, Y DO CARS H8 ME?. And I will admit... I shed a manly tear at Church's speech at the end of the last Season 8 episode.

Yes, actually. I enjoy the old comedy style, but the direction it took is pretty awesome, with a deeper story and some awesome action scenes!
