So I just watched the Wtf is... of Serious Sam 3 and TB said that we need more old-school shooters. Frankly I agree with him even though I haven't even played all that many old school shooters. I am not a big fan of Call of Duty or Halo but I'll be damned if Painkiller is not the best fps I have ever played. I just want more fps's to be like that; put me in a room and gice me some cool guns and a hell of a lot of enemies to kill and let me go crazy.

Maybe not exactly like old-school shooters. But we at least need to get away from the modern military ones. I hate those these days. The only ones I liked were CoD 1 and 2, basically. Well, and MoH was pretty decent I guess.

There were games like bulletstorm and painkiller, but BS was...well BS. The campaign was short and the multiplayer sucked. And painkiller...wasn't entirely my style. Using what are basically arena's and dozens of respawning enemies and such. I want more games like Doom 3 or quake 4. Run and gun fps' that don't look at 'gritty realism' that much and let you carry more than 2 effing guns.

Not really, no.
I can play them generally for half an hour, maybe an hour or so before getting really bored. It all just feels really insubstantial.
The kind of shooters I do enjoy? Well, I just started playing Max Payne 3 recently from the Steam Sale. God damn it's fun.

To answer the picture - no. I do find myself wanting to just load up Unreal Tournament, though - the one without the fancy numbers :)

Also, played some Half-Life multiplayer, yesterday. 'Twas good. I still remember the good camping spots XD Kids, remember, choose the G-man skin, then get the rocket launcher (or the machine gun with some grenade launcher ammo), fire a rocket at a wall, get your crossbow out, and go and crouch with your back to the scorch mark - it would be really hard to notice you. And since there is only one map in Half-Life, here are the best spots to do this trick

On the either side of the bunker here (you can see everybody coming, but they would have a hard time seeing you, since it's far and they are stupid don't know this trick.

And next to that left most window there (and the right most, which isn't shown on the screenshot) - the main advantage is that peiple genuinely can't see you - you are behind them, after all.

And a final piece of advice - when somebody presses the button, don't bloody rush to the bunker. That's the stupid thing to do - instead just kill people as they are foolishly rushing blind to their surroundings. The second position up there is brilliant in that case - people wouldn't bother looking around - after all, they are in a hurry to get to the bunker and survi...oh, how odd, they died, well, now they'll have to go even faster right befo...oh, they died again. You can seriously get more frags if you don't go in the bunker at all I've done, like, 5 in a row easily, you can get to as high as 7-8, and if you play with more than 2-3 people, then even more, possibly.

We also played some Counter-Strike. Really old school - v1.1 =D it was a bag of laughs. Also, the weapons behaved just wrong. Oh, and I got to meet some old acquaintances of mine - the POD bots.

No, not really.

I mean, I've played Doom, and I've played Painkiller. And out of all those "BFG" shooters, my favorite has been Bulletstorm which a lot of people didn't even like.

Honestly, I'm one of those people that feels you can do more with first person perspective games than just turning into shooters. So I definitely don't like the CoD or MoH types either.

I like Bioshock, or System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Portal, Fallout or Elder Scrolls, and maybe Farcry 3 if it turns out to be as good as I'm building it up to be. So there!

I'm actually fairly content with stuff like Natural Selection 2 and Tribes: Ascend.
Sure there are loads of crappy samey shooters out, but I just don't play them and happily frag away on things that are worth my time.

Not quite finished Serious Sam 3 yet (had it for over a year, only played a few hours), but it's alright. Was more into Wolf/Enemy Territory and Quake than SS, as my previous multiplayer/team based examples would suggest.

To an extent. Massive hordes of enemies and ridiculously over-the-top weapons? Hell yes. I'll take a flak cannon or a railgun over yet another M4 variant or "AK-47" any day. But being able to aim and have a movement speed that's either not moving or hyperdrive has its upsides too.

I'm actually rather happy with shooters this gen.

Tribes Ascend, Farcry, Fallout, Max Payne 3, Bisohock, Resistance, Half-Life ect. If you stay away from the big military shooters, you can find something this gen that you like

Take off the nostalgia glasses, guys.

I 'unno, I reckon old school shooters are catered for on a more indie scale, I'm not sure AAA would handle it all that well.

Not especially. They are fine, but I don't get a raging hard-on whenever someone brings up something like Painkiller. I much prefer my shooters to be of a more Halo/Half-Life flavor, in all honesty. But, more variety in our gaming is always good, so I support more of that type of game coming out. :p

Not the old school shooters like Quake, Unreal Tournament, Doom, etc. I was never particularly into those.

But the old tactical shooters like Rainbox Six 1-3, SWAT 3 and 4, the original Ghost Recon... hell yes. I've been playing through those again over the last few weekends and all of those mentioned are just fantastic, tense games.

Not really I can always go back and play them modern games haven't taken them away from me. I would rather see shooters try something new for once.

Yes I do. It's not that I wan't shooters to go back to the way they were 10 years ago. I just want the developers to shake things up a bit. I also don't want modern shooters like Call Of Duty to go away. Variety is the spice of life after all.

No, not particularly.

I always found them to be too mechanically simple for the gameplay to be of much interest and they don't make it up in any other aspect.

The entirety of the cherished old school shooter is circle strafing or backpedalling (depending on whether you're up against a ranged or melee based enemy) while spamming in the general direction of your foe(s). That's it. That's the whole thing. Maybe if you're very, very good you'll get to go keycard hunting.

That simply isn't enough to keep me engaged for more than half an hour or so. Painkiller bored me so utterly shitless that I didn't even finish the demo. The famed shuriken-and-lightening gun was pathetic. Primary trigger to shoot small, feeble, grey projectile, secondary trigger to shoot feeble jagged blue line. Serious Sam 3 (does it count if it's made in 2011?) was better but rapidly turned into a hideously repetitive chore.

However, it should be noted that I'm not exactly in love with modern shooters either. The military ones in particular turn me right off.

I wouldn't mind seeing some more shooters that attempt to blend the two. I enjoyed the hell out of Bulletstorm. Actual varied and gratifying weapons. The ability to fling enemies and objects all over the place. Tons of hazards to knock enemies into. Now we're talking. Something like that with fully destructible environments and slightly more open level design would be a joy.

Yeah sometime like being able to crayy several guns at once than having only 2 and not needing to take cover behind walls and etc. Granted I don't hate the current FPS but it would be nice if there was one fps game that was like the olden game (which I hoped that to be Timesplitter).

Yes, and I'm tired of shooters trying to be as real as possible because it just becomes a hand holding sight seeing tour from one shoot out to the next.
I got to play Homefront for the first time and the game is pretty much shoot everyone, teamates move up to the door to breech then you do that then shoot more, repeat, chapter end, you walk around having drama dropped on you, then more shooting, breaching etc.

It's not bad but it's certainly not Serious bloody Sam. I don't know why all shooters now have regening health and these sequence of 'hallways' with doors to breach. What happened to maps, healthpacks and just letting the player shoot everything?

Also:

Bound to piss off an old school shooter fan.
