Poll: Do you play games fairly?

When I'm about to try something, almost anything on any game, I save the game. If I don't get the outcome I wanted, I load it and try again, or try something different. Is this fair to the gaming experience?

I guess the question could be phrased: Do you play to win or for the challenge?

I thought of this since playing oblivion, but realised I do it with pretty much every game that allows me. If a big battle was coming up, or a tricky puzzle, I'd make sure to save. Agreeing with yourself to NOT employ the save/reload tactics makes a game more tense in my opinion, more real (if that's the right term to apply to a computer game!), yet I still find myself doing it! I think I'm going to try and only save when I stop a session. What do you guys think?

If it's like Fallout 3 I prefer to just play it through how I play it through the first time.

That is to say, if I slip up in dialogue and something goes wrong, I live with it because consequence makes your next choice really mean something.

I save often in Oblivion/Fallout 3 so I don't have to redo an hours gaming. again.
I've made the mistake of not saving the game too many times.

When it's possible to save manually I sometimes do it. Especially before engaging in conversations where loot is involved. Try before you buy.

Sometimes. I try not to, as it tends to break the flow, but if I make a big mess, I will. Unless I have a certain file with which I have forbid myself to do so.

I try to, because if you ever cheat once, you open the floodgates, and eventually ruin any challenge and make the game suddenly boring.

GTA# being a perfect example.

I don't have time for 50 million retries in my games.... I will do whatever the game lets me to do to succeed.

I don't play to win but I don't play to repeat the same boring part 200 times. I save, when I can, everytime. Sometimes after each enemy kill if f5 is available. Besides why isn't this a fair way of playing? The developers made it so you could do it that way. If they didn't want you to they would just have used an autosave system.

I do that alot too, but I really don't think that it is "unfair". Especially if the game has an autosave feature because then the game is doing the same thing for you. I have been doing it frequently in Dragon Age: Origins. I die, go back 3 mobs, and when I get back to where i died I save because I honestly don't want to have to go through these 3 damned mobs everytime because the damned NPCs take 10 seconds to process that there is a dragon on me tearing my organs out.

I abuse it regularly in Phoenix Wright games. If I don't know what's going on, I save and then randomly throw the stuff in my inventory at the witness.

Also in Pokemon. I must've accidentally killed Rayquaza at least twelve times.

Usually in RPG's I save now and then and if I ruin a relationship or quest etc I'll re-load

Most other games I won't care.

I always saw the autosave function as a failsafe against unexpected program failures, ie if you game suddenly closes for whatever reason you can still play from roughly where you were. I think of it as unfair as the challenge is almost removed in certain situations. In some situations, such as bosses in Final Fantasy games, it's a given. The save point system in final fantasy works great. Imagine if the computer player could do the same thing to you? Or if you could do it online? I think the challenge comes from throwing yourself in there and accepting whatever comes your way, good or bad. It's especially relevant in strategy games, such as the Total war series, where one bad battle can cripple you for a relatively long time. Usually though the game designers still allow you to make a comeback, else when you lost a battle or whatever you'd be dead for good. Not always relevant though, eg Oblivion etc.

Normaly i just live with my mistakes. If i get some NPC killed on a escort-mission, well... bad for him.. it was most likey his fault *g*. If i use too much of my ressources (Healthpotions or such, meh i can get more).

What i will load and change is when i am making a decision and the game does not allow me to follow up like i want. (You say the I will KILL you answer to intimidate - and your character automatically kills him, without being able to say: Muhahaha, just kidding or so). Or if you get... a stat-bonus or such, and i have to give an idiotic answer to get the right one.

But overall: I am in for the story and atmosphere. So my character makes mistakes and i will live with them.

Well when it comes to online gaming Yes, I play very faily. Like say im wrecking the enmy team in MW2, I'll just switch to the USP.45 to give the enemy team a better chance. Of course that chance never comes because I wreck even harder with pistols.

all the time because I want to see all the content in game, and some times you have to, mass effect and fallout3/oblivion are good examples.
