Things: Any tangible object that you keep. Video games, DVDs, custom parts for your car, music equipment, etc etc

Experiences: Stuff like traveling, going to sports games, taking martial arts lessons, road trips, eating out, going to the movies, etc etc

Things. So much.

I am going to end up with so much crap by the time I expire. I look forward to forcing it all onto my children.

It's kind of a 60/40 thing, leaning towards things, but that'll lean much more towards things when I buy all the pieces of my NCR Ranger Combat Armor and some guns.

i prefer things, becaus i like having something tangible that i can enjoy (for free) forever (or until it breaks). that is also the reason why i refuse to buy DLC or WorldofWarcraft (I already bought this god damn game, now leave my wallet alone!)

Cannot things be experiences also? It seems to me that they can be.

OT: By your definition, mostly things. Their are exceptions every now and again, but it is usually things.

Good games can be treated as experiences, as can music and videos. At least, that's how I feel about them. But given your premise I'll have to go with things.

It really depends. I consider luxuries as rewards to my effort, and those rewards are objective based.
Two years ago I ensured I saved up enough money to go skydiving.
Last week I rewarded my proper scheduling of a large project with a box of cookies.

Hmmm, I was about to say I buy more things but really the bulk of my money goes into travel expenses for vacations.

No generic bias. Depends on what my situation is, and what the thing/experience is. What i DO tend to do less, is spend on stuff which's consequences are short-term (which may apply to things as well as experience).

So, if there is any bias on my end, then it's based on the time-dimension, not on the thing/experience distinction.

I'd have to go with things, and this seems to be the prevailing opinion. It makes sense, really. "Experiences" are usually expensive and happen very rarely, like going on a trip once a year during the summer. "Things" on the other hand, are usually far cheaper and common, and can even provide experiences of their own. If you look at the actual amount of money spent, though, it's probably roughly even. A vacation my cost about $500 (more if it's extravagant), but if you buy a bunch of games in the same year, say, 10 or 12, the average costs of the games will probably bring the total amount close to $500. Even if you don't buy a bunch of games, you may still buy things like books or movies. (If you buy an new TV or Blu-Ray player, that could even out with an extravagant vacation.)

By your definition, I buy things much more often than I buy experiences. Just this weekend, I bought $23 or so worth of used DVDs, all of which are now proudly displayed on my shelf. Considering that I just got a new home theater receiver for Christmas, which, combined with the equipment that I've spent the majority of the last 10 years of Christmas and birthday money building, plus the various items that have fallen in my lap over the years because other people were upgrading and looking to get rid of their old stuff, and the occasional piece that I bought with my own money, is now essentially better than any non-imax or 3D theater in my general area, I'd say the DVDs are a much better buy than an equivalent amount spent on movie tickets at the theater.
