Simple question.

I bring this up because it seems that a lot of people on this forum aren't well acquainted with the idea of "Respectful disagreement". I mean, alright, I used to do this, but then I wondered: Is it really smart to think less of somebody simply because they have a different opinion on video games than me?

I generally try to respect people's opinions... unless it is just flat out stupid or hateful or something like that.

I respect people's opinions aslong as they respect mine, and we are both aware that there aren't any "right" opinions.

For example, I respect "I didn't enjoy this and thought it was badly done (explanation here)".
I don't respect "That was shit!".

I respect that other people have different opinions than me.

Be a fething boring world if we all thought the same.

I certainly don't think any less of a person for their opinions even if we will never agree on certain subjects.

Guess I can't put that down without accepting that I'm "f*cking stupid" myself sometimes.

I do, unless they say "Transformers 3 is the greatest movie of all time". Usually, all that happens is that my eye twitches, and at worst, blood spurts out my nose.

I don't respect people just for showing up. I can disagree with someone who can back up their opinion and still respect them -- Armond White and Tom Chick come to mind.

But people (often on boards like this one) who express themselves like idiots should just be ignored.

Usually, if it's based on some rational grounds then yeah, however rationale rarely applies to areas like art, be it movies, literature or paintings etc, in which case I acknowledge their opinions but not always respect them.

Depends on what opinions are.

For me, saying "Lost was stupid!" is an opinion. A stupid one.

Saying "Evolution didn't happen!" is not an opinion. It's just someone being wrong.

"1+1 equals 3" is the same kind of not-an-opinion.

I accept that people have different opinions from my own. so long as they respect my right to an opinion on whatever, I shall return the favor.
however, there are a few exceptions...

if it's someone's "opinion" that jews are the reason for all the wars, or that everyone who believes in God is a moron, or that 9/11 was caused by George Bush, or something similarly idiotic, insulting, offensive, or narrowminded*, I will not hesitate to point out that, while they are entitled to their opinions, it is MY opinion that the world would be a nicer place if there were less people who shared such views.

another exception is if something like this happens:
me: "I think X is Y."
other person: "REALLY? REALLY? YOU'RE A TOTAL ****** IF YOU THINK X IS Y. X IS OBVIOUSLY Z. YOU'RE PROBABLY A FAT RETARDED LITTLE KID GIRL WHO WAS MOLESTED WHILE SUCKING DICKS BECAUSE YOU ARE A *****."
then I will make no attempt to be formal, since they could not grant me the same luxury.

*for examples, check anything by PETA, anything by the Westboro Baptist Church, the seedier part of YouTube, and, sadly, some parts of the Escapist... not generalizing here, just saying, I seen's it...

Mostly not, because I'm arrogant, confident and have a sufficently big ego that I simply (almost clairvoyantly) know that my opinion is the most thoughtful, valid and appealing one, by far. Not forgetting to mention that I'm (sadly almost everytime) quite right. It mostly always happens the way I thought it would happen (I'm a pessimist by the way, so this makes things worse). It would be better to be wrong from time to time, I know and I've tried, it would teach me some humility but I can't help it. My massive ego-centric selfabsorbing mind has it all figured out by now.

There is of course the rare case where I actually ask for another opinion, not for amusement mind you, but out of curiosity. Then I accept almost any other opinion.
Generally, I do tend to accept humorous and well written opinion far better than others. While on the other side those opinions that blatantly obviously show the brain-farting ignorance of the poster herself won't be bearable even If the topic is completely uninteresting, far away from important and not even slightly catering for my inclining Forum activity here.

Just remember that there can be stupid, baseless opinions. An opinion that can't be justified can by all means be pointed out as completely f*cking retarded

I respect the opinion of the person generally as much as I respect the person themselves. That said a person's opinions can drastically change how much I respect them, for better or worse, if you talk out your ass and are disrespectful I will never respect your opinion, regardless of what you say. That said the opposite holds true as well, even if I disagree with a person's standpoint if they are well mannered in how they present themselves I will respect their opinion.

This is of course barring people's opinions that are derived from false information. I will correct the information that they have presented as best I can, but even well mannered people will lose my respect if they insist on having an opinion base wholly in false information.

I dont think that many people have a problem respecting a persons opinion. Its when someone assumes their opinion is fact that things get out of hand. Its fine to debate, in fact, its encouraged, but dont be a dick.

Personally, I assume that gravity exists and what im seeing isnt a hallucination. Everything else I judge by probability.

Edit: Forgot about discrimination. Anyone who does it actively is an awful human being. Thats my opinion-as-fact.

I don't respect opinions; I respect people. As long as I feel that the person has given his heart and soul to a cause, I can respect the person even if I feel that his premise was stupid to begin with.

I try to treat people with respect. I try to respond respectfully. That doesn't mean I respect the stupid crap some people say. Anyone who says one should respect all opinions is forgetting that some people think the holocaust didn't happen, some people think homeopathy works and some people think women should not be allowed out of the home unaccompanied or unveiled.

Of course not. Since this is the internet, I am always right, and everyone who ever disagrees with my sentiments are automatically wrong.
And because of that, I clearly have the authority to call them every insult every created by mankind.
