This subject has been bugging me quite a bit lately. When I was younger I used to take it for granted that by the time I'm older humanity will have cured aging and would one day have reached the level of technology required to travel and explore our galaxy (think Star Trek or Mass Effect).

As I have grown older I've come to face the facts. Even if we do acquire some means to immortality it would never be used for various reasons and theoretically it seems to be impossible to reach a speed faster than light, regardless of the level of technology our
race has at it's disposal.

What's even worse is that humanity seems to have completely abandoned the dream of space,
setting even Mars, which isn't that far away, as a hard to reach goal and considering the
newest gadget which can access twitter "State-of-the-art technology". In fact, Obama
scrapped the whole Constellation Project and nobody gave a damn, people care more about
his god damn birth certificate.

I may be giving too much thought into this but this seems to be one of the few rare things
that I do care about in my life, maybe some of you share my opinion, time to find out.

I think people just think they'll die beforeit matters.

But we're quickly approaching the generation that needs space travel.

This sounds oddly similar to a thunderf00t rant.

My honest to god opinion "meh" feels like something that wouldn't benefit me, my children or my children's children. Solve most of the problems we have on earth and then extend your reach.

I think that it will takes a very very long time to get every problem solved before humanity will turn to traveling space, as in maybe a few hundred years, if not a thousand at the very least.

I wish my great great great great grandchildren luck, but I don't think interstellar travel will happen anytime soon.
There's nothing particularly interesting in this solar system, and all the others are too buggering far away. Yes, landing a man on the moon was impressive, but what, exactly, did we accomplish again?
A nice boost in morale all around, and a few pretty rocks to look at. Or juggle, if you'd like.
I think we should just wait for the aliens to come, then steal their stuff.
Haha, ET, you can't phone home when we've nicked your iCommunicator. And iTeleporter.
I also would like to take the opportunity to apologize to my great great great great grandchildren about that whole Global Warming thing. Our bad.

Can I point out that the human race hasn't abandoned space travel, Nasa has (for the moment anyway). China however are putting in tons of resources into their space travel. So if we get to Mars, lets just say it will probably be a Red planet for other reasons.

Assuming we don't blow ourselves up, I do think that it's POSSIBLE for man-kind to acheive intersteller travel, maybe even within a few decades.

We better get off this rock soon.
We're causing the next big extinction event right now, and we might completely poison the well.

I think a tsome point we will I doubt in my life time, bu I do think we will have colonized the moon, or mars by my death. Obviously not terraforming.

Nope. I don't know of any feasible way to travel faster then light, which would be a requirement.

As a little kid I didn't like Star Wars or other space-related movies/series because I was too bugged with the thought of how did they ever get so much metal to build all those things.

I never did believe in it.

If we can't achieve space travel and colonise other planets then the human race will perish trying to support itself. There is already a population crisis but there is not enough co-operation between international governments to deal with it, or even take it seriously...

I believe it's the human destiny to reach other planets, but it looks increasingly unlikely to happen. Even our most brilliant astro-physicists are consigned to the fact that we completely lack the understanding, technology and resources to reach them before the population becomes too large. Even at our current rate of technological advancement, it would not be enough.

Obama, unfortunately, is making the right call in delaying/abandoning the constellation project. Getting men on Mars just won't save us alone, so in a time of global difficulty, it makes little sense to pour so many resources into it...

World is probably screwed, just be thankful you'll probably be dead before things get really bad, Drell homeworld style.

The insane speeds and such they travel at, where the g-forces should be shattering the bodies of the main characters, and you're worried they don't have enough metal? Don't get me wrong, I love Start Wars, but it just doesn't seem possible. I want to believe, and occasionally I delude myself into thinking it could, but certainly not in my lifetime. Maybe some small moon colonies, but nothing like "hell yeah, we found some new galaxies that we can reach and hang out in!" No.

Ever? Of course. While the NASA cutbacks were disappointing, they're only a temperory setback. As a sci-fi geek, I've love to see more significant progress in my lifetime though.

There is no reason to travel the galaxy. We've sent billions of dollars into space when we could have been using that money wisely. We need to improve the overall condition of everyone in our country, let alone on Earth, before we want to play spaceman.

We won't see it but its going to happen. I never really supported Obama but I was pissed he canceled the shuttle program and planned to replace it with robots. Its the one good plan Bush had that you could call a vision even if he put it as we are gonna build a base on the moon by 2020 something.

Humanity will not be capable of interstellar travel in the forseeable future. On the other hand, humanity will not be capable of rendering itself extinct in the forseeable future either.

Come back and ask again in a mere thousand years time, things might be different.
