I lol'd so hard... it seems that we are short on polls? People, stop mining, research polls! xD

@Topic: No. MMOs can be decent substitute for life, and that's their purpose, right?

I hate MMO's, for three reasons:

1. They're ridiculously difficult to get into for new players.
2. You have to grind dozens upon dozens of missions to level up, which is extremely tedious
3. Combat is dull as dishwater.

The idea of playing with a lot of players at the same time is obviously not.

Look at sports teams - a lot of people love doing that.

The idea of playing with a lot of players can be used in good ways which allow each individual to contribute something meaningful, to be their own hero, so to speak, like Starcraft and Quake team games. However, I've noticed in many MMOs, being something greater than yourself is hardly affected by how good you as an individual are.

If it's not obvious, what I'm talking about is most raids being quite mundane, and most team combat boiling down to numbers and gear rather than skill, reflexes, or strategy (PvP and PvE).

I would like a MMO does that well, and allows the player to shape the world around them in a significant manner, and allows players to look and feel unique rather than a replaceable job by any other member of their class or class role (tank, healer, whatever).

I would love that. Currently, all the ones I've tried don't do that much. Or if they try to, their population is incredibly low to the point that it feels like Diablo II.

No not really. Different type of game for different interests.

People like a creating character development system, team work with many others online and to become really powerful with cool looking weapons and armour. Especially when you get a clan with over 100 people and destroy castles or whatever together, it's friggin epic!

Besides, I hear more about Half Life 2 and FF 7 more than any other game and they are old now.

I can't say all MMO's are overrated because I have only paid free MMOs and WoW. I will say that among the MMO's that I have played. The only overrated one I played was LOTR MMO. Everything seemed inferior when compared to WoW. I loved the MMO genre and I will always have a special place for MMO's in my online life.

I understand two and three but could you explain number one. I have never played an MMO that was difficult to get into.

I think alot of MMOs overrated, especially Runescape! But I think there's some MMOs that are underrated. I think WoW is overrated for the same reason Halo 3 could be overrated in that they have the most people playing them and people see them as "average" although alot of people would argue they aren't. I've played an MMO, for 2 years, that most people wouldn't get too far into to realize how good it is and I see it is way deeper in content and more fun than WoW was when I tried playing it. If you think something is overrated, chances are it's because you dislike it when so many people don't, except for GTA4, that game is far from perfect *cough* ign. No game genre is "overrated" because it is represented by the games it contains. It's just the notorious games that are seen as "overrated" by others that make it so.

Well, when I tried out MMO's I found that they basically give you equipment that could be described as minimalistic as best, and subsequently drop you into a world with people and creatures which can kick your arse in less than 5 seconds. As a result I had to wander around trying to find something I could beat up and get better, but it was a chore for me, personally.

Plus it's an extension of point 2 for me. I can't really be bothered to play enough to be on the same level as everyone else.

They're overrated. They can't keep my interest for very long, usually. Here's the rundown on what I do in MMOs whenever I'm in them:

I get into the game, all curious and wanting to kill stuff badly. I build a character according to some idea I had before coming in that's based upon characters from my writings. I start killing stuff to get better and better, and then I start to explore. Because...I like exploring, and this is a new world with new challenges. Exploring takes me to new creatures to burn and new quests and such. That's always fun.

Eventually, though, the leveling-up curve is slowing to a crawl and it's taking forever to get any headway. So, I begin to go places that should outright kill me and challenge myself onto the worst of the worst to see who comes out grinning. (It could tell you some stories about that, believe you me.) Eventually, the adventurous me is kinda' bored and investing time into a guild, more exploration, and punishing people or cause others trouble (for no good reason at all) loses its thrill and I get off.

I don't even WANT to get into WoW. It's immediately uncool to me because everybody harps about it and it's just an MMO.
