I want to say something's before getting into the issue I wish to discuss about. This is very generalize and does not apply to everyone. I am aware that people dislike E.A, The games they publish, or both.

Now then, I think it's safe to say that a lot of people really hate E.A, but seem to really love the products they publish. People despise the business practices they have done, but Love the work that the various companies who work for E.A do. However, I've been noticing a lot in message boards, Comments on Reviews, and in various articles that people hatred is starting to grow beyond that. I've seen people despising a lot of the games because of those business practices and it has been influencing their feeling on a game. I've also really notice that a lot of the hatred towards these games seems less about that game, and more towards E.A.

Now, I can completely understand if someone where to hate E.A because of the business practices and the decisions they have made. Hell, I think it's great and can help the medium; If more people, especially game journalist, slowly mention things like Dead Space 3's Micro transactions, it can help prove to E.A that Micro Transactions are a waste of time. However, when people talk about their dislike towards the company and the game, I don't feel that it's their honest opinion or that they have even played the game. I feel like they can't just say "I hate this game because E.A has done crap business practices," but they're more or less just making up reasons why they dislike the game so they don't have to be called an idiot or something like that; I feel that they didn't even play it, pretend they did, and are just saying it just to say "E.A sucks." I just get this vibe of pretentiousness when ever I read stuff like that.

Now, this could be just be just being insecurity, thinking to hard on this, or focusing too much on the negative side of this. Hell, maybe it's the fact that this is the internet and the real world, and everyone feels like they have to say something even when they don't have to. I want to know what you think? Do you think we've been misjudging E.A's recent games, like Dead Space 3, Need for Speed: Most wanted, and that one Sci-Fi game that has something bad near a certain point of it that I'm sick of hearing about!? Do you think we let the hatred of them get too far in how we discuss something they publish?

Edit 1: I've been seeing a lot of people being upset about the recent Dead Space 3 DLC, since it was made during the time Dead Space 3 was Gold(meaning that the game is done and ready to be shipped out), it's just a way to get more money, work less on the main game so they could sell the rest of the game as DLC and make more money. I can see why people believe that, but I personally think people are over-reacting and becoming peranoid with their hatred towards E.A, to the point where if they promised to give everyone in the world, we'd all say "Well Gold also has radiation and can give us Cancer." Thoughts on that?

For me, I always go in to a game with an open mind, and do my best to temper any expectations I have regardless of what sort of legacy the game franchise, studio or publisher has on it.

I look at the game first, judge it based on that: if I'm having fun or not with it.

Then I'll look at the other related issues and legacy before coming up with a, hopefully, balanced, objective opinion.

if you are just looking for "fun", and don't care any bad aspects of the games, of course every AAA game will be 10/10 for you, and therefore, in your eyes EA do nothing wrong.

EA do mistakes all the time. They don't take responsibility and never apologize for them.
Because you get "fun", and they get "money". Any problem? No.
But unfortunately there is real problem, and those problems lead to give EA a bad name. If you don't solve them, you can not get rid of EA's bad reputation.

EA develop and publish very big budget games, they also get huge profits from them. But they avoid getting risks.
They don't care about the gamers, the community, for example I remember C&C Generals players were complaining about not getting updates, patches, and not getting the similar treatment as Starcraft players.
EA also cares money over quality. They even lately said that they will put microtransactions to every games, even singleplayer games. They love milking their products to the death.

Only EA game i haven't been disappointed about over the past year was kingdom of amular. (yeah i was late to that party) So no i don't personally think we are being too harsh on EA.

Like Bonecrusher says they care a little too much about money. Don't just say well a business is made to make money. There are many good companies which don't put money before there customers or meddle in the quality of the game.

Considering that the team behind Dead Space 3 was just fired like so many devs before them, I'd say they deserve the hate they get. Until the EA cycle of "buy promising studio, make future games in studio's series as homogenized as possible, then lay off studio once sales start plateauing" then I see no reason why people should stop calling them out for it.

No. People aren't too hard on EA. EA behaves like a big, evil corporation and has pioneered anti-consumer practices. They also make very few games actually worth playing. It's not really a surprise when people dislike them; they have a horrible marketing arm that shows nothing but contempt for their customer base.

I say yes because the question concerned their games, I think we can be too harsh on those games, and we have in the past year or so. However, I hate their business practice and the way they destroy smaller companies

I dislike EA games, not EA's games. They have Bioware so I am forced to play their games(unless DA3 sucks then I'm freeeeee). I also like some of their other games too. However their business practices are horrible and they might have ruined Bioware and if they did I will never forgive them.

Wait, what?

Doesn't that suggest that every AAA game is fun by virtue of being AAA? It's the bad aspect of a AAA game which can make it not-fun. I for one can't even bring myself to play the copy of Hitman: Absolution sitting on my shelf, even though I am - by virtue of the fact I'm playing video games - clearly looking for "fun".

I don't believe it's possible to dissociate their business practices from the quality of their games.

DRM, for example, becomes an absolute menace when it reacts badly with a user's PC, much less when you get into server-side errors, etc. But further than that, to me it just doesn't matter to me if its the best game ever made if its ensnared by those practices, because every single purchase of it is a giant sign to the publisher 'we can get away with abusing our customers in this fashion'.

"EA" does next to nothing. They are a publisher. The developers they absorb make great games. That those developers go off the rails more often than not shortly after being bought raises serious questions about EA's corporate culture and the affect it has on their subsidiaries. EA is also a public relations buffoon, constantly making foot-in-mouth pronouncements that go over like lead weights and provoking additional outrage where none was needed.

Does EA deserve the hate they get in the gaming community? No. Worst company of the year? That was a fucking joke. There are companies out there making deliberately amoral decisions that actually cost lives. EA just screws up video game developers, and treats their employees badly.

They're a shitty publisher who seem hell bent on alienating their customers at every possible turn, so they deserve a fair share of condemnation. The bandwagon "EA is worse than Hitler" crowd is ridiculous, though.

I don't think EA needs defending. They publish some great games, they have some arguably awful business practices.

If the gaming community stopped being against EA, then another publisher would take the throne. Always gotta be upset at something.

I'm just concerned with how clusmily they've implemented their monitization schemes of late. That and they never published a Bad Company 3. I miss Bad Company :(

I don't like EA, but I don't hate them either. As I was saying in anther thread (before it got locked), there are worse things in the world than DRM and micro-transactions.

Most of us (myself included) wear clothing made in third world sweat shops. If I was going to break out of my apathy and boycott something, it would be that. Compared to the evil business practices of the Clothing Industry, the games industry looks like saints.

I could talk about food and music as well, but I don't want to belabor the point. Is EA sucky? Maybe. But it's less sucky than a lot of other businesses. Does that mean we should WANT them to screw us over? No. But does it mean that there are better ways to spend our time and energy than insulting EA all day? Sure.

Good advice, captcha.

I don't think its possible to be "too harsh" with EA. This isn't a company that has the best intentions but makes mistakes. This is a publisher that borders on cartoonishly evil.

I actually think we're being exactly the correct amount of harsh on EA and their games, If you'll notice all the news articles about EA are negative, but their games still manage to get reviewed well enough.

So that just proves that we can hate them and still be fair to their games.

Not even a little, not even a micro-feeling of being "too harsh". They deserve all the criticism they get, period.
